I have the Canon Rebel T2i (550D)
How can I tell if it's a foreign version? On the bottom it says "Made in Japan" but that's about it, and the USA versions have that on the bottom too.
So any indicators?

By using different "nicknames" they can tell quickly whether the warranty is valid or void for the area the camera came from. Canon 60D,18-55mm,55-250mm,50mm compact macro, AF ext tubes. I'm open to correction, but it's my understanding that the warranty for lenses is international. Can anyone give a rationale on why bodies are treated differently? ~ Wallace

Cameras on the gray market are usually cost less from the local distributor. Canon will service grey market cameras but they will be treated as "out of warranty" even if they are bought new from some other country.

He lives in New England and ships his stuff to family in Scotland for distribution. My 70-200 2.8 IS had a sticky switch problem; Canon UK repaired it without demur. If they can do it for lenses, why not bodies? ~ Wallace

That's not necessary true IMHO, Canon usually determines the warranty of a certain camera by its serial number, I don't think the name has any relevance in warranty claims.

If they can do it for lenses, why not bodies? exactly, but AFAIK, what generator said is true, lenses and cameras bought from other countries are considered gray units in the Philippines. and Canon Philippines will not honor any warranty claims. I assume other countries have the same policy.
