Markins Q10 locked up at low temp (-15°C or below)? I found mine has this issue. I wonder if anybody else found this problem?

I haven;t used it below -4c and haven't had any problems.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you bring it out of a warm environment, set it up, quickly, the ballhead will still be cooling and, therefore, shrinking, which could account for the lockup. I don't think it would be a lubricant.

I find lenses don't AF properly until their temperature has stabilized, in cold weather.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

No high-end ballhead should not require ANY lubricant (especially WD-40). Bohdank's suggestion is probably the right one. Or just send an email to Markins and see what they have to say.

I use mine in the cold all the time. Are you sure that you don't have the friction control set too tight?

I have their Q20 and never had that problem. Shot last winter in 0 degrees farenheit with 25 mph wind. It never locked up. They were good folks when I dealt with them for the purchase. I would drop them an email.

My Photo Clam froze up while I was shooting the eclipse - but not until it had been out in -25C for almost 2 hours...

no friction control set at all because I knew it'll lock up fast if I do.

Tried WD-40, it helped a lot.

From Markins manual:
" 5. Apply about 3 drops of WD-40 to the ball"
" ... ... Before going out to the field in cold weather, cleaning can enhance trouble-free operation and prevent from getting moisture and freezing."

I have a Q3T, and that one also lock up in the cold. I can't manage to adjust the friction controll limiter with mittens, so the head is totally unusable in the winter.

Yes, I had a Q3 lock up on me in -11C the other day. I keep a little aluminum screwdriver in my bag for these sorts of occasions (to get the friction limiter unstuck).

Never had the issue, then again, I didn't do many hours of shooting below freezing.

Shouldn't need a screwdriver. Just tighten the main knob and the friction limiter will unstick.

Markins manuals now come with brief instructions on a ball cleaning routine that will "enhance trouble-free operation and prevent from getting moisture and freezing". Apparently a thin film of WD-40 on the ball is the key.

Hmm. Really? I once got the thing so jammed that I had to abandon a shoot because I couldn't use the ball head. That's what made me buy the little lightweight screwdriver to keep in my bag. Maybe it didn't occur to me to try to tighten instead of loosen. I'll have to to try that and see if you're right!

The problem with that little thumb screw and low temperature, is that I have mittens on my hands. So the little screw is out of reach (without freezing my fingers).

That doesn't work for me. The head doesn't work in the cold (when it is dark, and I really need a good tripod)
