I arrived at a basketball tournament this morning to find my Gripped 50D dead on arrival. No sensor cleaning, no LCD, no blinks, nothing, nada, zip, zilch, - dead.

I tried the usual tricks to revive it; replaced the batteries, removed and replaced the grip, removed the grip and tried it with just the single battery, swapped batteries altogether, put it back in the bag & let it think about it's behavior for a while when I used my 7D, - then tried everything again at halftime with no success.

I am confident that the batteries are good, and both batteries were charged full yesterday afternoon. (Just to be sure, I swapped them both out with two other batteries from my 30D - the 30D works on all four batteries.) The camera has never been dropped or abused, and has less then 10K clicks.

My questions are: Has anyone else seen this issue, and does anyone have any other suggestions for a quick fix?

Hopefully someone here has a magic fix that will save me a shipment to the Canon Service Center.

Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions.

Sounds like you covered all the bases. Too bad. Time for a trip to Canon.

BTW, someone will chime in any minute now that you should change the small watch battery too. Don't waste your time - it's just to keep the date/time when the main battery is removed. The 50D works just fine without that battery if you don't mind resetting date/time once in a while. I ran my 50D for a week with it removed entirely.

Have you verified the door to the memory slot is fully closed? I know it sounds stupid, but I've had the door on my T2i partially adjar and it will kill the functionality of the camera til I discover the dolt that I am...and close the door. :D

Add me to the Dolt Club! I thought I had checked the door, but it was closed just enough to be shut, but not enough to trigger the switch - close but not close enough.

Working like a champ now - thanks Koala Cowboy!

Another happy POTN customer!

That's trickier than the silly little microswitch in the hotshoe track that will get messed up sometimes and make the camera insist that a speedlite is attached when there isn't.

I know this thread is three years old, but when I searched the Web for 50D dead, a link to this thread was at the top of links returned.

When I pulled my not-used-lately 50D out today and inserted a fresh battery, it was completely dead. Another battery and removing and re-inserting the CF card didn't help. I then removed the 'small watch battery' and slid it back in, and voila - the camera came to life. Corroded contacts, maybe ?

Anyway, something else to check for those coming here as I did. Great forum.

This is just weird. I got a good chuckle from this thread a few days ago. Yesterday my 5D would not turn on. After 30 seconds of WTF? panic, I noticed the card door was slightly ajar. Add me to the club.
