opening RAW files in CS4

Help! I'm trying to open RAW files from my Canon T1i using Photoshop CS4. I've downloaded several dng converters from Adobe without success (DNG_Camera Raw 5.2, 5.4 and DNG Converter 6.3). I wonder if the problem is that I have installed CS4 on a new laptop (Windows 7) and CS4 is no longer supported with updates, but I need those updates to make the converters work?

Suggestions most appreciated.

The converter (6.3) should work. It is a stand-alone program that you have to run and point it to the folder where the RAW files are located. It will convert them and save them to a folder where you can open them in CS4. Does anything happen when you run the DNG converter?

Duh! Thank you so much. I didn't realize that it was stand alone. It's working. In the past, I've been able to download a plug in that works fairly seamlessly with Photoshop. This is a little more effort, but at least it works. Thanks

Raw support for the Canon 1D Mark IV was added to Adobe Camera Raw 5.6. That means that raw files from that camera model should open in Photoshop CS4 since ACR 5.6 is compatible with CS4. If you can't open your raw files you need to update your ACR module.

ACR 5.7 is the final version that was released for CS4 so you should install it. The easiest way to do the update is to start Adobe Bridge, click on Help > Updates and let the Adobe Update find and install all the relevant updates. Once the Updater starts running you will need to close Bridge.

Alternatively, you can download the ACR 5.7 update from either of these links and install it manually:

I seem to recall that 5.7 did need to be manually installed -- I think because it was a "special" update to provide the newer "2010" Raw processing, but I could be misguided there because I don't have CS4:)!

CS4 should be able to open your T1i raw files (using ACR) without converting them.

The Bridge updater worked fine for me.

Oh well, OK, maybe I had just heard of some "stray" incidents like Ace posted about above.

EDIT: I should say I always advise people to run the Help Updates before trying to do a manual install!

Adobe's updater module does seem to be a bit inconsistent.

I use CS4 and it automatically installed ACR 5.7. Don't know the reason for Adobe Updater inconsistency, but it seems to be fairly common.

I have cs3 extended. CS 4 is on it's way [maybe tomorrow] Am I going to be able to open files from the 7D or have to play games ?
I like taking a raw file , dropping on PS and it opens - dpp opens everything in that folder .
I already installed the new dpp but still have old one in dock - can I toss it ?
Is the new DPP compatible with all the files the old one is ?
Thank - Happy new year .

Yes CS4 will support the 7D with the proper update of Camera Raw (you want ver. 5.7).

And yes DPP is "backwards compatible" so you can ditch the older version. An updated EOS Utilities is great to have with the 7D as well because current versions of Utilities open up capabilities with the newer bodies when doing tethered shooting that weren't around in the "old days":)!
