MP-E 65mm lens hoods on eBay - £12.50

We all know how expensive Canon lens hoods are for just a small ring of plastic. The MP-E hood is also difficult to obtain here in the UK for some reason. I just noticed that our friends in China are now making copies, and they are on eBay right now. I have never seen these before.

I paid a best offer price of £11.50 including shipping. It has to be worth a shot at that price point!

Do show us when you receive it!

Just out of curiosity, why a lens hood on the MPE-65? The working distance is so small already.

Think people tend to use it as a lens protector plus it can be useful when using the MT-24 flash to stop flash light going straight in the lens.

I'm going for it because I'm using a Schott KL1500 LCD cold light source as an illuminator. This has long fibre-optic goosenecks which can be positioned very close to the subject for ease of focussing. It is easy to get stray light in the lens in this situation. For a couple of pounds, the problem is solved!

BTW, I will gladly put a review up when I receive the hood.

I made a couple of miniture snoots from black card to go on the end of the goosenecks. I can slide them backwards and forwards to restrict the illumination to specific parts of the subject.

The Schott is a joy, Canon Bob! With so much directable light, focussing on very long extensions is actually easy for once. My attempts at snoots have not been very successful so far, though. My "card" is too much like paper. A visit to Staples beckons!

Just so people know, I received my lens hood from China about a week ago. It one of the JJC brand ones. I can only report that it is very well machined and finished indeed. I have seen a genuine Canon one, and I cannot see how the "real thing" offers any advantage at all - especially for nearly £30 more. Considering the very low cost of this accessory, I would thoroughly recommend it to anybody with an MP-E.

I have not attached any photographs of the hood, because the eBay sellers ones are very clear and accurate representations of reality.

Well I which I had known about this, I had to import mine from the states at some expense.

I always use it by have never noticed much difference.

On another but related subject, I have taken to using the twin flash for high speed sync fill in in bright sun using the 100 or 180mm macro. I bought a cheap rubber screw in lens hood to mount on the twin flash bracket without interfering with the flash heads.
