Im thinking of selling my Canon 15-85mm, and picking up a Sigma 30mm f1.4 and Sigma 85mm f1.4

I did want the 24L instead of the 30mm, but have decided to wait of i go for the primes...

What do you guys think?

Chris

I personally would not want to be without a convenient zoom that covers the range from wide angle to short telephoto. I specifically have kept my old 5D and my 24-105L because together they cover this important use.

What specifically are you shooting that needs the two faster primes?

I know its a hard choice to make it really is lol, iv been over this so many times in my head at what would work better and reasoning and i still cant make a decision...

I had also thought maybe going for the 24L Mk1 instead and swapping out my 70-200 F4 IS for the the new f2.8 MKII, as iv started to do a lot of video work again! If i did do this i would probably keep the 15-85mm

Hmmm lol

I used to have two sets of gear. I had a set of slow zooms (17-40 and 24-105 mainly) and fast primes (35L, 50/1.4, 85L and 135L).

Every summer I would take a lot of vacations and I would carry around just the two zooms for the most part. It was a reasonably small kit (on a 5D) and worked very well. By October I would always be thinking 'why do I keep all these primes that I do not use?'

Then in the winter I would shoot more and more indoor events. Dances, parties etc. I would use pretty much just the primes and the zooms sat unused. By April I would be thinking 'Why do I keep all these zooms that I do not use?'

Since getting the 1D4 with it's very good high ISO, I need the primes even less so I now have mostly just a set of f/2.8 zooms (16-35, 24-70, 70-200) which I can use year round.

It can be difficult to decide.

I use a similar setup to Jeffrey's old setup and I think it works great (set of slow zooms: 11-16, 17-40, 70-200 & fast primes: 24, 50, 85). Zooms really have their place and it would be hard to give them up and just use primes. I know it works for some people (all primes), but it would be difficult for sure - and I LOVE primes as much as anyone. I would just save up any get the 30/85 and then if you still feel you don't use the zoom - you can still sell it later. If this is not a possibility - maybe you can just limit yourself to only those two focal lengths on the zoom for awhile and see how you feel. By the way - nice choice in primes - I had the Sigma 30 (one of my favorite primes) and have heard nothing but great feedback with the Sigma 85.
