Over Christmas my Mom and sister had asked for some impromptu portraits. I figured I'd use the picture window w/curtains for a backdrop, and use one 430 EX II off camera to camera left for lighting, along with ambient overhead lighting. My biggest mistake that I noticed after the shot, was the ISO was set on 6400. Any other critiquing would be appreciated.


P.S. If it's not big enough, I can try to resize the original.

With the exception of the hot background this is a nicely done portrait. Hindsight is 20/20 but closing the drapes more would have helped. Both subjects look relaxed and happy. Poor Setter looks like it wants to take a nap.

Any way you could use the light from the window to light your subject? That hot white strip just doesn't work for me. Subject exposure is good though.

Thanks Fellas. DS, actually that's a Golden Retriever, believe it or not. Titus, the backgrounds were running pretty scarce, but once I realized the ISO was on 6400, and kicked it down to 400, the white sheers had plenty more details... oh well, live and learn.

Nice touch on the tree too.

I like the star bursts on the tree lights. The owner's pose is good but the dog's eyes are a bit closed. The colors are over saturated IMO. The BG in the first image is very distracting. Was vignetting added to the second image? The light fall off makes the image appear to have ghosting around the subject.

I told that pooch to keep his dog'gone eyes open (pun intended) , If I remember right, I didn't add that much saturation... I'd have to look tonight at the setting. I'm looking for the ghosting, but I'm not seeing it... Maybe you could point it out?
