I'm looking for a bit of advice and experience from MT-24EX users please.

I am getting some gear together, including the MT-24EX in readiness for taking pics of butterflies, damsels and dragonflies using my 100mm macro lens.

What do you find are the most effective diffusers for this flash?

Thanks in advance for your help

not easy to diffuse properly - clearly Canon did very little field testing - but SteveB's method works well. I have a similar simple version; the front can scare the odd bug off.

I've also been experimenting with a similar diffusion method to SteB as well - you can find a more indepth article on the method and the theory behind it as well as examples and pics here:

In addition you can check out Dalentech's blog which details not only an alternative diffusion setup, but also various setups, approachs and methods for working with the lens and general insect photography

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

I went out shopping for something to diffuse my light source, and came up with this dome at Home Depot.

I just cut a hole in it a couple hours ago. I need to get a step ring to secure it to the lens, and I need to get something to extend the flashes further out away from the globe, with adjustability. Granted this won't work in every shooting situation, but for some, it should offer up some good results.

I managed to pop off a few shots, albeit in a clumsy way. Here are two pics, first one with long exposure led light direct, and the second with long exposure led with the dome. Don't have any live bugs hanging round, so I got me a dead one.:D

I'd have to say I'm happy with the result.

I'm new to this also, and it occurred to me that more modding is necessary in my little dome setup. The first obvious thing is that some of the dome in the back needs to be cut away to keep it out of the background of the pic. Also that a flat mirror could go on the lens first, before the dome is secured to the lens, for the purpose of funneling the light to the dome area nearest the lens.

I have made my own set up, im still working on it bit by bit, but it does a pretty good job:

Added to the dome setup today, used some foil to funnel some light for frontlighting a subject. Plan on replacing the foil with Mylar, just gotta find the stuff. The second pic gives a good idea of how well it funnels, and I'm quite happy with the results in spite of the crinkles in the foil. The lighting is a florescent on the ceiling to the right.

I ran into these for holding the two flashes on the MT-24EX, should give all the placements needed for this setup. A bit pricey and I hope they are not to heavy.

The real drawback with this setup is that you won't be shooting directly at something on a wall for instance, lest you take an angled aproach. One nice thing about this, is the ability to turn the dome 360 degrees and the refelctive material seperately, along with full control of the light source, such as one light direct and one diffused.

Anyone out there with any suggestions on how to improve on this?

white material from hoover filter.

Gotta wonder if you're losing to much light with that setup Racketman. Thats a lotta material to go through before it hits the subject. Can you shoot F16 with that, and at what shutter speed?

No problem shooting f16, 1/200 in manual. Perhaps too much diffusion could extend the duration of the flash to compensate?

My extenders for the flashes arrived today! They are about 8 inches long, Just right! They are stiff enough, just right! Not to heavy either. You have to be careful when bending them however, as the MT-24EX that I'm connecting to is plastic. Here are some pics of the almost finished setup.

Sorta has that insect look. Maybe I can sneak up on them better.bw!
I gave up looking for some mylar, and ended up polishing up some aluminium sheet, close to mirror reflection. The dome and aluminium sheet are secured with a step-up ring, 58 to 77mm, in the event I might put my 77mm polarizer on.

Took this pic of a polished, one and a half inch steel ball bearing. The reflection from it shows the dome, and how well the flash lit it up. I tried to light the entire dome on this shot. Not perfect but that can be worked on.

This should turn out to be a very versatile setup. The dome and reflector turn easy enough. The flash units can be anywhere top or bottom of the subject, as the pic below shows a bottom splash for light.

Total cost?
The extenders are a bit of a killer. $50.00
The dome can be had for $8.00
The reflector material was $8.00
The step ring $10.00
Polishing the aluminium took over an hour, and I would have settled for some thick mylar in a heartbeat.
Sanded the shine off the dome, both sides. Not sure if that was necessary.

I seem to find these work really well, defiantly for higher mag shots - the light seems to work very well from 1:1 to higher mag shot 5x etc!

Seems to do really well over the different range subjects, from ladybirds/frogs to ants and flies
