@pi_314, how you shot macro in 3X - 5X? when the distance is too short?
Well, as I said in an earlier post, this set-up will not work to well shooting things on a wall, or on the ground for that matter. I took some shots yesterday and the best I can do on a wall for instance is 1X. 3X-5X is reserved for shots like a bug on a leaf, where there are no obstructions in the way as far as the dome is concerned. The goal here was to get light everywhere around the subject, with adjustability to that light, and this set-up does that in spades.
I am certain that I will be removing the dome on occasion, to get a shot that can't be done with the dome on, with high magnification. In that event, diffusion will be directly on the flash units and limited to that smaller window you are forced into as far as light is concerned, no way around this.
I do have another dome that I sorta messed up on that I'll probably cut much smaller, that should allow for 3X and maybe 4X, with the less choice for lighting of course, such as front lighting and nothing else, but thats what you are reduced to short of an off camera flash.
It's dead winter in my neck of the woods, but here are a few shots taken yesterday. The entire dome was lit up in these pics.

Probably should take some shots with and wthout the dome, for comparison purposes, because in some cases, I would think, you might be better off with no diffusion at all. Learning as I go along. The dome will cut down on shadows for sure, illuminating most everything in the picture. I guess it depends on what you are shooting, for it to be a good thing or bad.
