How Does Canon Decide What Lenses Come with Hoods?

I thought I understood this... L's get hoods, non-L's do not...

But recently somethings have messed me up. The TS-E 90mm f/2.8 which is not L DOES come with a hood! At the same time, another lens in a similar price category, the MP-E 65mm f/2.8 DOES NOT come with a hood? Who decides these things at Canon, it makes no sense to me!

Thoughts? Explanations? Method to this madness?

They should all come with hoods. IMHO.

I don't know the answer to your question, but the TS-E 90 (~1220 USD online) costs about 1/3 more than the MP-E 65 (~920 USD online), so I wouldn't consider them to be in a similar price category.

Other than T&S, do any other Canon non-L/non-DO lenses come with hoods?

Is there something special about the T&S hoods that might be why Canon supplies them with lens purchase?

I think TS lenses are specialty lenses that are quite expensive and so Canon just threw in the hood.

Maybe the macro shooting distance might be messed up with a hood (I don't know, never used the MP-E and didn't bother to check specs), thus Canon doesn't include one.

Canon is using Manatees to decide which lenses will be shipped with a hood.

Manatees are smart marine mammals and it has been recently shown that they are particularly good at marketing decisions. Fox has been secretly using Manatees for programming decisions for years and now some people claim that Canon joined the club.

No, they make a hood for it, you just gotta shell out extra.

I would think TS lenses are more susceptible to flare due to their larger image circle, even if the sun doesn't show up in the viewfinder doesn't mean it isn't shining into the front element. The non-L lenses that are more susceptible to flare probably come with a hood, the cost of the hood would be minor compared to the negative reviews resulting from the reduced image quality. Then of course the L's come with them just because they cost so damn much.

As for the 65mm MP-E, I don't think a hood has much practical use for macro.

Oh, I think this is very simple - cuz they can and it bears a brand name. Anything around with a brand name cost twice, thrice as much as a non-name brand item.
Many people will refuse to buy a third party item, which performs as well as the original or even better and ironically enough may have been made on the same factory in China, just didn't get branded.

You don't need a lens hood for a macro lens when you're that close

Have you seen the hood for the MP-E 65mm? It's not your typical lens hood. Check it out...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …01_MP_E_65_Lens_Hood.html (external link)

A lot of people use macro lenses without a hood. It can get in the way when you are working so close to your subject. Whether or not you need a hood on a macro is another matter.... Shooting small products and using studio lighting, I often use one.

As a rule, Ls get a hood, everything else doesn't.

The general design and build of all the TS-E lenses is identical (granted, the Mark II versions add another plane of rotation... I imagine they will all be updated to this designe eventually). Two are Ls because they use exotic glass elements. Two are not Ls simply because they don't need those fancy optical elements to do their job well, and so don't "qualify" for a red stripe under Canon's own definitions of an L-series lens.

Still, they need dedicated, special lens shades, and are more prone to flare than some other lens designs... so Canon is probably wise to include the hood with them.

Meanwhile, they are just milking the market for every last penny, selling the hoods for the rest of the lenses separately.
