i have a RRS L bracket on my 1ds mark III. i have a phottix wireless shutter release that i use when doing longer tripod shots. the QR on my ballhead is a flip lever made by RRS.

i discovered while on vacation that the plug on the phottix receiver was too high and did not allow me to use my camera in portrait mode. is there a shutter release (cable release in fine) that has a low profile plug that would not interfere with my QR clamp when using my 1ds mark III on tripod in portrait orientation?

thanx,

a temporary solution might be to carefully drop the ballhead into one of the head's slots so that the ballhead becomes a sort of wimberly mount. Granted it drops the over all height and throws the weight off tripod's center. Again, be very careful dropping an heavy body and lens into a ballhead slot.

But it may be better than nothing until you hear other choices.

thanks. i'd use the timer before i did that. i shelled out $200 for the L bracket so i wouldn't have to use the ballhead slot which is PITA ;).

if the L-plate for the 1Ds III is the same as for the 1D III, you should be able to mount the L-plate so there's space between the plate and the body, enough for the remote plug to clear the clamp.

thanx Leo. the bracket has two slots on the bottom but on closer inspection the screw is too big to slide down the slots so really there are two holes on the bottom. one hole puts the bracket flush to the body (like i had it) and the other hole creates a gap of about 1 1/8", which gives me waaay more room than i need, and creates other issues.

it looks like i'll need to keep an L wrench handy when i'm doing long shutter stuff ... unless someone knows of a cable release that will work when the bracket is flush to the camera.

If you look at this link to the L bracket for your camera, the first two pictures show the screw sliding in the slot to allow for the release connection. You sure they sent you the correct screw for the bracket?

That screw should easily slide through the slotted hole (just loosen the screw a little and try it). The first one lets you press the L-plate against the body on one end and gives you a quarter inch of clearance on the other end of the slot. The 2nd slot is used when you want to attach a WFT-E2 transmitter to the camera.

Dale -- the page would not come up for me but i'll call RRS tomorrow. the holes on the bottom of the bracket are threaded and the screw diameter is wider than the slot on the bracket.

if the bracket were meant to slide i don't think it would have been designed that way.

Ed, the RRS site seems to be going up and down some. The link worked a couple of time and then nothing. But it just worked again. Good luck with the bracket.

Hmm, then you must not have the stock screw that came with the L-plate or someone at the factory installed the wrong one. There's supposed to be an unthreaded stem between the head of the screw and the thread which allows you to slide the screw along the slot.

Like these (screen shot of RRS page:

Leo -- i got Dale's page to load, and here's what it says:

Dual-position mounting is compatible with wireless transmitter, the Canon WFT-E2A. See images at left!

if you look at the pictures it shows the bracket is either flush to the camera or about an inch away. maybe they bracket has been redesigned not to slide?

edit: you may be right, Leo. i bought two L brackets and one was used. i'll give RRS a jingle tomorrow.

The image below shows you how much clearance you should have with the screw in the 1st (shorter) slot. And the image below that shows how the screw should slide through the slot. (Excuse the iPhone snaps.)

Hope you get the right screw soon.

BTW, in the meantime, can you swap the screws of the L-plates so that the right one is on the 1Ds?

I love and own a lot of RRS stuff but that's one of the first things I noticed when I was shopping for the L's I put on my my MKIV's.
I went with the Kirk's because of the longer adjustment slots.
You can tweek em to what ever you need for clearance.
