Hi. Newbie here about to dive into the DSLR world. I'm set on the 60D body, but not sure which lens to go for. I'm interested in the following in order of priority:

1: Small concerts/night clubs
2: Portraits
3: Nature/landscapes

Also at small concerts/shows, I will be taking advantage of the HD video capabilities, so ideally this 1 lens can also do a pretty good job here as well.

My current budget only allows for 1 lens but I'm willing to put in the extra $$ for 1 great lens that will do 1 and 2 great and perform at least "ok" with 3. I'm inclined to rule out primes since I'd really like to be able to zoom if I'm going to be with just 1 lens for a while.

Please excuse my newbie-ness if I come off asking for some magical lens that doesn't exist.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!

Night clubs you will need a fast prime (ie 50 1.4 possibly 1.8, or 85 1.8 etc)

You wont really find a all inclusive lens for all your shooting. Depending on your night club or concert venue the nifty fifty might get you by (50 1.8) for $100 give or take.

Lanscape and portrait you might get by with one lens such as a 15-85 IS USM. I use that lens for almost everything. But the nifty fifty double as a great portrait lens as well. Maybe a 17-55 2.8 efs lens but it is a grand alone.

I have shot wide angle landscape and nice portraits with my 15-85. It is to slow for night club concert work. Unless you want to shoot at ISO 6400 or 12800 all night but not ideal.

Gear List? My gear is bigger than yours? Just shoot have fun...

Do a search for "night club lens" There are hundreds of responses to questions similar to yours. Your No. 1 priority might require a wide angle lens.

lol i'm on the same boat as you. i have the 60D and its great. but now i'm stuck with a 70-300mm lens. i need to get rid of it because i plan on shooting in the dark, portraits, and anything the doesn't require a fat zoom

1. Sigma 30
2. Canon 85 1.8
3. Nature = Canon 70-200 f4 .... F2.8
3. Landscape = Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20
