I did not expect MSG Varsity to have the "big" crew at this game. So when I showed up, I had to quickly scramble to find spots to place the two strobes - not in my normal set up spots.

3) Always love a little glove to the face! This was mistakenly shot at 320, hence the brown ghosting on the right.

Is the rink that dark...your 7D should be able to handle high ISO needs. I personally don't like stobed hockey for the shadows and harsher front lighting. You did a nice job though.

It's a dungeon- the worst of three rinks---
The pictures look great- no easy task in that rink!

Go Chatham!

Love em....Awesome job. I love the fact that my attention is drawn right away to the players....and not the ice (in so many other ice hockey pictures the ice or boards are blown out).

Love the pics but I dont like the shadows. Is there a specific reason you used strobes?

How are you setting them up? Does not appear to be bounced light - have you tried that?

I much prefer the strobed shots over the high iso, big crop, big noise shot that these dungeons usually produce.

cheers !

No, the rink is not bad and the 7D at 3200 is fine. I just refuse to shoot Varsity hockey, or paid jobs, without strobing.

Click here (external link) to see our local paper's photographer and you will actually see her shadows are much worse. She does not strobe.

Wow - thank you everyone for the comments and feedback. And overall I do agree that I would like the shadows on the face, or on #16's body, to not be there. But the Post-Pro is minimal. I only open the dozen or so that need adjustment or cropping in photoshop, Where as without strobes, I would import all to Lightroom and adjust colors, sharpness, etc.

Ironically, the only ones I really like are 1 and 3, I feel the others are not naturally sharp - which I blame on my hands.

I see what you are saying. In the links you provided, photos are off in wt balance and the timing is off. Were your stobes directly pointing on ice, or bounced. Many rinks here have a white or silver finish...adding to the ambient and ability to bounce. I guess I like a more natural lighting feel, not heavy front lighting. How many stobes did you bring and tell us about your set-up.

The normal set up - bouncing (external link)

The rink - from a game last season (external link)

since MSG Varsity was in the booth with my video crew, I set on one strobe on the ladder, you will see it at 11:00 in the set up photo.

The Roof is not reflective at all, but a white standard panel. you can actually get a great bounce off of it as well as the these flat walls give a nice reflective bounce.
