Can you or anyone in your immediate family qualify for a student or educator discount?

Photoshop elements 9 does.
With older versions there are add ons that will do layers and curves.

Thanks. I want CS5, but the price would stop a new tripod purchase. I have lightroom and usually do a little levels and curves in CS3, but have a new computer and WANT all new stuff:lol::lol:>. Want to learn more also. Elements would be a stepping stone.

PSE 8 has levels and a rather clunky Adjust color curves .

There is also an addon Elements+ that gives masks, paths and some other stuff it's about $10

The best thing to do is to download the Elements free 30-day trial and give it a spin, taking some tutorials on and so getting some hands-on learnin'!

Then, if you decide it has stuff you want, I'd suggest getting some reading matter. A decent book to start with would be the Scott Kelby book -- his stuff is chock full with useful hands-on tutorials. Another one to check out would be the Elements "Missing Manual" book. Between those two, you should have plenty of bases covered and be able to get to work with confidence.

Elements+ will add curves, masks, soft-proofing, and a lot of other stuff. It's an add-on and only costs $12. I have Elements 6 and it already has levels.

Out of the box Elements has Levels and a very basic sort of Curves adjustment. I have read several good comments about Elements+ but haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

I think rw2 misspoke when he mentioned "layers"; Elements has long had both adjustment and pixel layers. Elements 9 added Layer Masks.

Why in the world are you considering Elements if you have CS3 and LR

Upgrade special is $174 on Adobes' store till 1-5-2011.

Elements would be a stepping stone.

Yeah, stepping backwards IMO.

Elements has had both levels and curves since at least version 5. The levels is similar to Photoshop levels; the Curves is much more limited than Photoshop Curves. In PSE, you cannot add points to the graph and you cannot work on the curves of individual color channels (it's rather ironic that the feature is named "Adjust Color Curves" given that limitation).

Elements does have layer masks starting with version 9.

CS3 is on a computer not mine. So upgrade not possible. Have my own computer now. Thought Elements would be an intermediate step. And I know I should buy it once and do it right!

OK, then Elements probably makes more sense for you. Do you have LR or is on the other as well? I think a lot of people get by very well with LR and Elements.

For most people Lightroom and Elements can be an excellent combo. Photoshop CSx has, of course, very powerful tools if you want to work at a "pro" level in terms of volume/productivity and high-powered tools for various things, but if you have a good workflow for Lightroom you may find yourself only needing the occasional touchup or repair in Elements in which case you don't need the expense and overhead of the "full" Photoshop. Only you can decide what will best suit your needs (and what you can afford).
