So, which would you rather shoot with?

Here's the back story:

I currently own the 7d and a 5Dc.

I used to own the 28 and loved it but wanted an f/1.4 lens at the time. So I sold it and bought the 35L. Very good lens but it became an awkward FL as I migrated from a 35/85/135 prime trio to a shorter 35/50/85 set up. So out went the 35L and in came the 24LII. This is about the finest lens I've ever owned. Problem is, it's just too big for my purposes. I really liked the more discreet size of the 28 and never felt the IQ was anything less than good (even in the corners in real world shots). I don't use the 24 for landscapes, as I don't shoot them often and when I do I have the 16-35L for my wide. Also, I'm finding that I don't often shoot that wide at that wide an aperture (f/1.4 & f/1.6).

So, I'm seriously thinking of selling the 24LII and getting a 28 with a hood and using the rest to upgrade my classic to a 5DII.

Hold on to the 24L and save up for the 5DIII.

If you were happy with 28, I don't see why you shouldn't save the money upgrading the body.
It's not something I would do but I never tried any of those two lenses. But I strongly believe that some L are overpriced and the image quality doesn't reflect the difference in price comparing with an non L.

Here's an interesting little tidbit: The 28mm f/1.8 has a slightly shallower DoF wide open than the 24LII has wide open. ;)

I would say that this prime is one fine lens and probably worth every penny to someone who shoots wide and fast. I just don't think that's me...

Camera bodies come and go but glass is forever.... Sounds like something my dad told me about girls vs. friends.

If its money… Get a 28mm for the time being to wet your whistle!!! its a good lens despots what some say… you have to shoot good to get good images!

but I would save up for a 24L… what you get besides the creamy fotos… is the weather sealing too and the amazing build! something most overlook for the sake of picture bokeh!

enjoy!

Heya,

If you're stopping down the 24L, then definitely let it go. I don't see much of a reason to move from the 5Dc to the 5DII. For that cost, I'd move to the 6D if anything. Lens wise, if you really liked 28mm at F1.8, for the size, then by all means, go back to it.

That said, have you considered something like the Rokinon 24mm F1.4 manual lens? Not sure how you feel about shooting manual focus. Then again, it's probably a bit bigger than Canon's 24L.

Canon's latest mid-tier primes, that they re-release with IS, have been very very good, very sharp. And their sizes are wonderful. Plus they're low key and don't draw attention. The 28 F2.8 IS is a nice lens. Not sure how you feel about losing a stop of aperture though.

Very best,

24LII on any body over a 28 1.8. That is my dream lens.

If you have the 24L II KEEP IT. If you don't have it GET IT and KEEP IT. I would never part with mine.
Don't buy a used 5DII get the 6D new or used and get an ND2 filter, it works great in low light too.
24m on FF is not alway the ideal FL, but I would not leave home without it.
Either shooting tight spaces indoors at f1.4-f2.8 or outdoors at f4.0-8.0 it shines.

It's all good, lol. :) I just moved into a 1DsIII (very, very happy) and my main lens (believe it or not) is the underrated 28-105II. I bought it to use for street figuring if anything happened to it, it would only be a $150 loss. But since I mainly shoot portraits now (so, stopped down a lot of the time), it's a great lens. For the times I need to shoot at thin DoFs I have the 85mm f/1.8 and I've been known to use my 300 f/4 IS. And, as of this morning, I have a beater of a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 heading my way; a "bargain" from KEH. As long as it focuses right I'll be happy.

Happy shooting.

My Sigma 50mm wasn't sharp at all until f/2.8 so I sold it. The new version is to die for. I decided to stick with the pancake for my normal prime needs. But nothing creates a more interesting picture than the 24mm @ f/1.4 on a full frame IMO.
