From a recent trip to Vienna, Austria, taken outside the Vienna Opera House From our flightdeck while crossing the North Atlantic. Lufthansa A340 passing us at FL360 while we were cruising at FL340 Crossing traffic flying from Vienna to Geneva. Contrails got stuck in the wing tip vorticies. Since a vortex can only terminate on a boundary or another vortex, tip vorticies roll themselves up into those donut shapes - the main wing vortex helps roll things up nicely. Not sure if you saw it when you took the picture, but the way the ring vortex wags in the wake of the aircraft is really spectacular. The Shinny
