I'm doing some flower photography, is there any guides/rules I should be following for better shots?

The depth of field in this one is a little narrow

Blacktop,

First of all, lovely flower shot. I know what you're saying about shallow depth of field. The problems of macro are many. You have ever decreasing DOF as magnification goes up. In an attempt to combat that, you stop down aperture to increase DOF which starves the camera of light, making you need increasingly long shutter speeds, and introducing diffraction blur. If you have a very sturdy tripod, you can deal with the long shutter speeds, but the diffraction is gonna be there. Do some tests with your equipment at very narrow apertures (f/22-f/32) and see how the sharpness turns out.

If you find the sharpness still isn't up to snuff, look into focus stacking. It requires software, but allows you to take a series of shots at wide aperture to maximize sharpness. You change focus on each shot to move the area in focus from front to back or vice versa, then you combine all the shots in post production with stacking software. If you have photoshop cs5 it will do it. If not there are some free programs to download that do a marginal job if the shots were taken very carefully. Focus stacking is the way to get maximum sharpness from an extreme macro shot.

Here is a shot I took with the 7D, a 1.4x teleconverter, 20mm extension tube, and a 70-200mm f/4L IS lens. That set up worked out to approximately 1:2 magnification or 1/2 life size on the sensor. At minimum, focus distance, or as close as I could get and still achieve focus, At f/8 to avoid diffraction blur, I was getting about .20 inch of DOF, which was about 1/5 of the grasshopper given it's angle to the camera. To solve the problem I took 6 shots carefully on a tripod, with the area in focus slightly overlapping in each shot, then combined all the shots to get the deep depth of field, which I had complete control over. I could have stacked more shots to get a deeper field of focus, or less shots to make it more shallow.

certainly - it's a panoramic merge and here are the shots used to make it - each frame is taken at 24mm with the 24-70:
