After owning several Canon bodies (AT-1 thru 5DMII) over the years, I asked my wife if she would like to replace her film Rebel with a digital one. She did not like the feel of a 5D or 5DMII. I gave her info on the 60D and 7D, and wanted her to chose. Guess what she chose? A N*k*n D3100 with lens kit. AND, she wants to buy the N*k*n macro lens for it. What is a person to do? After 30 years, I can't leave her, or the wife. Can a Canon guy live with a N*k*n wife? I know that Sicilians and Italians live in a mixed marriage. Maybe this will work also. thanks for listening.

Not sure if srs, but it's somewhat silly because then you have to dish out for separate glass/flashes/accessories between you too, whereas if she wants a telephoto and has a Canon she can borrow your 200 2.8.

Have you considered a Rebel? They're pretty ergonomic, and for a macro lens get the 35-80 and remove the front three elements.

Looks like you have some pretty nice lenses which are interchangeable with most Canon bodies. Too bad she won't be able to take advantage.

Well, there is always the Nikon lense line :) More $$$

All the bodies you offered are large ones. Might show her a T2i and keep her in the Canon camp. Some folks just don't like the bigger bodies. Not everyone has troll like hands and need suitecase sized cameras to take pictures. :):):)

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I am not an expert in this type of stuff, but it sounds like it is time to get a girl friend on the side who shots Canon.

I have no problem with people choosing between Nikon or Canon, but to me it seems silly for a couple to own different systems. If she gets a T2i (pretty much comparable to the D3100) then she can use all of the lenses and accessories you have.

Quietly slip in and sabotage her camera, until she decides nikons are not reliable. Then purchase a smaller camera in the CANON line. ;):D

just a few of my thoughts...

not to put judgement on you or your wife, but that doesn't sound like the smartest idea, accessories-wise. you got a few k$ in lenses there, plus everything that she might buy wouldn't fit your 5d2.

Sound like wife
Wants her own life
One may buy a shoe
May have new thing to do
But go to Nikon
Is a direct arrow at you
Why oh why
You have to say goodbye

Agreed. The T2i probably beats the D3100 on specs and is rather similar in size/weight.

I have read a few books and seen a few workshop descriptions by couples where one owns Canon gear and the other owns Nikon gear, so it is possible for a mixed marriage to endure.

Look at the bright side though. She won't be borrowing any of your lenses so you won't have to worry about how she'll use or mishandle them.

The Nikon 3100 is a small lightweight camera, better sized for smaller hands. The Canon Rebels have a terrible grip/form factor in my opinion, just too small and awkward to hold comfortably. I think your wife is looking for a light weight, comfortable camera to shoot with, that's all.
