In the past few weeks when I viewed POTN with Firefox (I'm using Windows 7), I experienced a lot of trouble. It hangs every now and then, for about 10 seconds. A moment ago I removed my profile in Firefox and tried to disable my usual add-ons one by one - I disabled one and then browsed POTN for a few minutes.

The hanging occurred when FastestFox was enabled and it didn't when FastestFox was disabled. It seems that the suspect is FastestFox. Yet the above test may not be reliable, as I was too impatient to test for longer times. I really can't put up with the hangings anymore. vmad

Currently I disable FastestFox, and let's see how long it takes for another hanging. I'm wondering if other users have similar issues. Any suggestions and solutions are welcome!

If it means anything, here are my usual add-ons:
Adobe Acrobat
Download Statusbar
FastestFox
Fission
Garmin Communicator
Xmarks
Java

More information: it probably has nothing to do with too many tabs. The most recent hang happened when there were only two tabs.

absolutely no problems here with FireFox and win7 64-bit.

Is it a particular thread, or just anywhere on the forums ?

It's anywhere on the forums, at least those 5-8 forums that I usually visit. Yes, I'm using Windows 7 64-bit as well.

If people are game, you may try to install FastestFox and see what happens.

It's 3.6.13. Firefox says there is no update for this. So, I suppose it's up to date.

I have no problems with FF (latest) in Win 7 /64-bit. I'll bet it's some plugin, or your net connection is flakey. Does the hang happen when something is already drawn to the screen?

For example, this morning after I looked at the pictures in the People forum, I went back to the front page (with the list of forums). When I tried to click on Market Watch, it didn't respond. Then the screen was dim and the computer hanged for about 10 seconds.

I'm pretty sure it's one or some of the plugins or addons that cause it. I reinstalled Windows 7 few weeks ago and there should be no virus or messy application history. I've disabled FastestFox now for about an hour of use. So far so good. I hope that is the cause so that I don't have to waste my time looking for the real cause.

I searched the internet and found that many people experienced their Firefox hanging one way or another. There are too many different causes that what I found cannot give me a definite answer except that this is not a rare situation.

Sorry, can't help your specific problem because like others, no hanging here.

But IMHO (as well as many others), FireFox has become a bloated pig. It has become what IE was years ago when FF joined the fray and exclaimed they were leaner and faster. And IMHO the new Plugin Container was just another way of saying "we couldn't fix it."

So if you're having problems and cannot determine the cause or fix it, I invite you to join me in finding a new alternative.

I think many of FF's problems lie in the countless plugins that people weigh it down with. I've been using it for years without an issue. I tried Chrome when it came out last year and didn't notice a huge improvement in speed or performance so I stuck with FF.

I think it must be Fastest Fox. So far after I uninstalled it, there has been no hanging. I'll keep the plugins to a minimum. Then everything should be fine.

I hope this thread may be helpful to those who run into similar problems.
