It's a Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 manual focus lens, fitted onto my T2i with an adaptor. It may be old but it's wonderfully sharp and one of my most used lenses!

Make sure you get more in here before the year ends!! :)

OK, will do...:)

I titled this one "Atlantis." I feel compelled to stress that it is a genuine photograph, not a composite. When I took this photo, the fog was moving just like waves in the ocean, rolling in and crashing against the hills. The waves moved much more slowly than water, but the overall effects were very similar. In this shot, you can see the closest 'wave' is breaking at the top, sending down some white spray. The 'surf' around the little village is where the last wave crashed already.

Out of curiosity, do you manage to "stumble" into these situations, or do you look at weather forecasts / radar for days in advance to plan this out? I have a very bad habit of never being in the right spot at the right time. :D

I'll admit I'm a planning freak, and I'm kind of obsessively patient too. I always keep in mind a dialogue that a fellow photographer (John Morrison) shared with me. He was standing behind his tripod when a guy passed by, and they had a conversation that went something like this...

Passerby: "You look like you're waiting for something that's about to happen."

Photographer: "I am."

Passerby: "Well...what, then?"

Photographer: "Dunno. It hasn't happened yet."

In other words, if you put yourself in a good place at a good time and wait around long enough, you stand a good chance of catching something extraordinary.

With my "Atlantis" photo, I did plan to be in that location because of the thick, high fog. I worked out with web cams the approximate elevation of the top of the fog, and then looked on topo maps to figure out where I could get that high and what I could see from there. I timed my arrival about 90 minutes before sunset to give me plenty of time to scout around for good compositions. Finding that little village was pretty lucky, though. If I hadn't been standing around a long while, I would have missed it entirely. Those waves of fog moved very slowly, and I didn't even notice that little village for the first half hour or so that I was up there, even though I was shooting just to the left of it. After I had been there long enough, I spotted it between waves. That's pretty much how I work. :)

Your last couple photos have been amazing - they really reflect the amount of effort you are putting in. I have found myself checking weather, but topo maps are above and beyond.

Great job on the past few, really raising the bar here.
