Up until last year I was the President of the Melbourne University Photography Club. We started up in 2008 and have over 400 new members sign up ever year. The majority of our members are international students who leave every year, so whilst we add more members every year, we remain relatively stable in terms of active members. Although we have a very large member base (over 1000), only about 20% are active, the rest just try and stay in contact as a lot are now back overseas.

We're a not for profit entity, and most of our events are free, or to cover costs only. We do a wide range of things like:

Competitions and Exhibitions, free Workshops, Portrait, Studio days, Camps and Outings etc etc:

Thanks for the links.
Other than the Melbourne group on Flickr I haven't found any active groups. 'Active' meaning more than a handful of members posting pics and more than a couple of discussions each week.

The Melbourne group is very active but the group admin are film fanatics and too many of the discussions get turned into HDR, digital bashing and 'in' jokes.

It irks me when creative people can't show tolerance for other people who don't do things the way they do. Why don't the film crazies who think they're "keeping it real" go back to using wet-plate?

I'm not bundling all film users in that opinion, just the intolerant and self important ones.
I won't argue against the opinion that too few new photographers aren't putting enough time into building a solid foundation, but it's fairly evident that "what do you think of my cat picture?" does not equate to "I am a pro photographer, mum bought me a sweet camera yesterday".

I like making photos and sometimes I think I'm getting better... then I realise it doesn't matter. I like making photos!

So the forum world is pretty limp, but hopefully I can find some real world photo activity in Melbourne... Recently moved and am keen to hunt down like minded individuals...

Im always keen for a meet up some time.

Well your signature certainly sums it up :).
Slightly off topic but in regards to activeness, might do some location scouting this weekend. A drive would beat sitting at home.

I've found ausphotography to be overmanaged as a forum - just don't disagree with the forum owner on any topic though and you'll be fine though, unless you enjoy being criticised or banned in very well publicised means. Photoforum is or was a great community but that's a shadow of its former self lately too

We don't really have a strong and well populated Australian forum at the moment. A few photography friends started up a new one called http://www.ausph.com (external link) but it's quite new though and isn't as large as the others.

heh, I joined ausph.com at the same time (last week) but haven't been back yet.

@smorter  re lenses and yes quite easy to get banned from ausphotography esp when you point out some are immune from the sites rules.

I haven't seen any issues like that with ausphotograohy. It's mainly just that it seems 'small' - I browse around, actively looking for threads to contribute to, and can't find any.

It used to be quite large if I recall, but members just got banned one by one

Also because it is so overmanaged, there are so many levels of disaggregation that it seems smaller than it is

I still go there regularly but yeah agree, there's not much to contribute to

Yes, C9000 is the goods

Have you spent 2 weeks doing an analysis on your collection of AA batteries?

Haha true that, it can become slightly addictive. Matching batteries in sets of 4

Some recent tax. A quick shot, in front of a wall at my home with 135 Octa. I only had once chance to change settings to try and get exposure right as he refused to stand in front of it again. The first couple of shots were over by 1.5 stops. Then he went back and stopped just long enough for me to adjust the aperture and quickly shoot this one.

haha, well I've only had it long enough to do a full break in cycle of one of the new sets I bought with it, and then put on the second set this morning. 36 hour cycles ftl.

That's the goods right there. Top work.
