I'm experimenting with a new BD. Note the neck and nose shadow. I assume this is common for Beauty Dishes, but how does one ameliorate it? I can limit it by moving the dish in closer and lowering the angle, but is moving the deflector another option? 22" dish, 32" inches from subject.

Thanks
Ralph

I can't be a 100% sure but I think the harder shadow is caused by the light going straight through the translucent deflector and the softer one is caused by the light reflected off the dish itself. If that's the case, then the way to eliminate the harsher shadow and, thus, the double shadow effect, is to keep the light from going through the translucent defelector. That is, make it a solid deflector.

It's a solid deflector painted white. 22" dish mounted on a Ranger RX A light, Chimeras insert mount for Elinchrom heads . See pattern from 34" below.

It's a solid deflector? Then I wonder where the hotspot in the middle is coming from? I wonder if part of the light reflecting off the dish is actually being focused on to the center of the projected light beam like a magnifying glass does?

Kacey.

BTW, I was checking out Roberts " The Beauty Dish: Quality Of Light, Deflectors, Coverage, Falloff And Catch Lights" thread, I noticed the same sort of shadow in the 4th post. The shots without deflector and with the mini deflector have stepped transitions in the nose shadow.

I've got the deflector that comes with the 39" DO and midi, I think I'll experiment with that and also send Jerry an EMail and see what options he can suggest.

That's what it seems to be. Then there is the fall off and then the outer illuminated ring.

BTW, I think the light and look from this is really nice, I'd just like to get a handle on how it works.

The deflector that comes with the 39" DO? You mean the new plastic concave disk that's white from Elinchrom? Is so, that's not a solid deflector. It's a translucent deflector.

Oh, wait! I think I misunderstood you. That's not the solid deflector you were talking about, is it? You meant to say that you were going to use the one that came with the DO, in place of the solid one, to see how that work out for you, right? Sorry, I misunderstood you the first time. :|

I have the same dish and saw the same thing. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the ridges in the dish.

Took this a few weeks ago to exaggerate the effect:

Not sure what is going on with your dish, but from my experience it is not common (or desirable?) in a BD. With my white 22 BD (PCB) I get a single, uniformly transitioning soft shadow. I could see how you would get this without the deflector in place or a translucent one, but not with an opaque one.

I really didn't notice it until I increased the exposure. Experimenting with the Elinchrom translucent difflector with and without foil on it yielded a little different look, but the double edge is still there. Here is a comparison with and without the grid. This is from 32 inches, I'm going to see how things look from 22" and 44" later this afternoon.
