Off to the local weir to give the Fader ND a thorough workout

Continue to be impressed with the G11 and the articulating screen allows comps not possible with the 7D (or very difficult even with an anglefinder). And the Fader ND's ability to alter the number of stops is a massive boon as it's then possible to pick the 'best' areas at different shutter speeds to blend in the final image

Here's a mix of shots using the G11, the 7D and the ND Fader in a variety of settings/blends. I'll leave you to decide which looks/works better - and for that matter which is the G11 and which the 7D (OK, not a serious comparison but the G11 performs pretty well!) ;)

#1 Scene Setter
Took Iorek Bernison (our nickname for him) for the walk to the 'falls - he enjoyed the walking/swimming, less so the hanging around at the 'falls! A good bit of water in the river from snowmelt - which also meant very muddy paths! :(

Nice series. The G11 works well in your hands.

Cheers, harlo!

Is no one going to guess which shots are G11 and which 7D?

OK, here's the info:
Canon G11
#1 - no ND Fader! ;)
#2 - 5.0 secs
#4 - 4 shots blended: 15 secs, 4.0, 0.80 and 0.10 - mainly the 0.80

Canon 7D
#3 - 4 shots blended: 20 secs, 1.0, 0.25 and 0.33 - mainly the 0.25
#5 - 30 secs

Most popular shot was #4, from the G11, showing it's the comp and not the camera that counts!

For all those that tried, a big Thank You and, it'll probably make you feel better, what was pointed out to me (and remember, these were only 800px images):

From You've Got to be Kidding (external link)

Over a two day period I invited photographers and local industry professionals to come to my print studio and look at a series of 13X19" prints from an Epson 3800 printer made on Ilford Gold Fiber Silk paper which were then hung side by side on my floor-standing print viewing box. This collection of seven people included experienced photographers, people from the commercial print industry, and other trade professionals. Between them there was at least 200 years of photographic industry shooting and printing experience.

In most cases I did not tell them what they were looking at, simply saying that I had been shooting with two cameras, and that they should divide the prints (about a dozen) into two piles – Camera A and Camera B. They were asked to judge resolution, accutance, colour reproduction, highlight detail, dMax, and any other factors that they wished to consider.

The Results
In every case no one could reliably tell the difference between 13X19" prints shot with the $40,000 Hasselblad and Phase One 39 Megapixel back, and the new $500 Canon G10. In the end no one got more than 60% right, and overall the split was about 50 / 50, with no clear differentiator. In other words, no better than chance.

Sick! Next time I'm looking to give a camera as a gift, I'm definitely going to check out the G11.
