So, New Year's Eve yesterday, I was with my father and we had nothing really interesting to do. I talk to him about a project I had for a wedding photo kit but I was missing a small piece and I don't think I could get it in a store. I wanted to be able to use my elinchrom accessories with my Canon flashes.

I was already somewhat prepared a bit since I had bought the Ranger Quadra adapter for the normal elinchrom stuff and a Manfrotto SuperClamp with the moveable metal arm..... and a Frio cold shoe to have my flash on.

My father is quite the handyman and he has a lot of tools in his garage so I show him what I need and he figured out what we needed to do in a minute.

So we took the evening to make it and here it is, not perfect by any means but it seems to work quite well.

Here is what it looks like all hooked up. The adapter is made of nylon plastic so it keeps the flash head from banging against the side of the elinchrom RQ adapter. I also have the handheld boom from elinchrom and plan to use it with that setup.

From another angle. I needed to have a small hole at the bottom to be able to use some diffuser inside the softbox since the speedlight flash is throwing the light right in front of it instead of all around.

What it looks like from inside the softbox. I might try with different internal diffuser (this is the frosted clear one) but I think that I might have too much light fall off in the middle.

A close up of the adapter. You can see the hole on the bottom, we were really near the border of the plastic.

Flashing in the softbox. I might have some small light fall off from 2 of the corners, but it's no big deal.

Took something I had near me to try it, so that was my headphones.

This is the test image I took.

As I said, it's not perfect but I think it can do the job for a while (before I get the money to buy a Ranger Quadra) :)

Very ingenious! My hat off to your father. :)

Quick question...what's that white plastic thing that you said keeps the flash from getting banged around inside the adapter? Was it originally a solid piece that you had to carve a hole into for the flash to fit through?

Exactly. We just took a whole piece of round nylon plastic and carved the form that we wanted (internal and external). The adapter on the stand is the standard Ranger Quadra adapter made by elinchrom.

The adapter my father made is pretty simple, but require good precision trimming. Then we put screws on both sides so that I could "lock" the adapter inside the elinchrom Quadra adapter.

Here you can see the piece of plastic before being "locked up".

The adapter on its own. The hole on the left is pretty important, it is the hole that keeps the elinchrom frosted translucent deflector from moving around.

Cool. I made a couple of speedlite holders using 3" and 4" ABS pipe.

Would you like to buy a vowel?
Go ahead, spin the wheel.
