500d Raw Files and Adobe Bridge Download

My first post here so please be gentle with me if I've missed an earlier answer to this problem.

I have a problem downloading CS2 Raw files from my 500d using the downloader in Adobe Bridge. I had CS4 Bridge when I first bought my 500d and found that if I tried to download using the USB connector the download stalled at the first CR2 file. I put it down to CS4 not being compatible with the new camera and resorted to using a card reader.

I've just installed CS5 on a new PC and updated to the latest version of Camera Raw. If I download using a card reader I can view the CR2 raw files in Bridge CS5 but if I try using the USB connection direct to the camera the downloader stalls (and has to be terminated by Windows) when it reaches the first CS2 file in the download.

I've found a couple of threads on the Internet which refer to this problem but they all seem to fizzle out without any solution.

Does anyone else have this problem and if so have they managed to solve it?

Best Regards

Alan.

Welcome Alan! Before trying again, open Bridge and go to Help > Updates. This will allow the Adobe Updater to search for and install any needed updates.

The latest version of Adobe Camera Raw as of this date, is version 6.3. After running the updater, you should confirm that you have ACR 6.3.

BTW... I also use the Bridge Photo Downloader with a memory card reader.

I myself use a card reader, so I've never even tried the Bridge downloader with a camera.

You should know that direct connect is more complicated and trouble-prone than a card reader.

But, if you really want to take that route, the alternative can be to use the Canon software, EOS Utilities, that came with the camera. It can be configured to open automatically when you plug in the camera. You can also use Canon ZoomBrowser (also on the disk) and it has more options.

Chas

Thanks for the welcome and quick reply. I had updated Bridge and Camera Raw but just to be sure I've re-checked. Both Bridge and Photoshop are up to date and Camera Raw is v 6.3.

The odd thing is that Bridge quite happily displays CR2 files that have been imported from a card directly but hangs obstinately when trying to import direct from the camera via the USB connector. It's an irritation rather than a real problem but I prefer just to come in from a shoot and plug the camera in rather than remove the card and plug it in to a card reader. Besides, my card reader is playing up at the moment but that's another ( I hope easily fixed) story.

Best regards

Alan.

Thanks for your response - I took a while to reply to Chas and must have crossed with your reply.

I just find it easier to use Bridge for all transfers of photos from different devices and cameras. I've used direct connect for a number of devices and as you say plenty of other programs work fine with this combination.

I was hoping it was something obvious that somebody else had solved or at least knew was insoluble.

Best Regards

Alan.

Well, Alan, I wish I had the answer! And, when you say you are having problems with your card reader, well, that ain't good! Have you tried changing it to a different USB port?

Thanks Tony

I don't think the card reader problem is related - it's a new PC and the built in card reader has stopped working after I installed a number of updates and lots of new software. I'm sure it just needs a driver update which I'll look into tomorrow. Popping a card into the reader in my printer is my fallback at the moment and that works fine.

I have the same problem with Bridge, albeit CS4 rather than CS5 on the old PC which is why I don't think the card reader problem is related to the Bridge issue.

It was just a disappointment to find that the problem I had with CS4 on the old PC was still present on CS5 on the new machine.

Best Regards

Alan.
