... So I get it, that a Wacom is useful for detailed brush work. I also get it that it is not much use for simply running actions, adjusting sliders, etc. But can somebody give me an actual description of how they use a graphic tablet, and how they use the pressure-sensitive pen to facilitate photo editing?

Thanks!

My tablet sits on my desk in front of me. I use my mouse for most things but for some things like Dodging/burning or
Healing/cloning I grab the pen and it automatically takes over the cursor. It's much easier to do these things accurately than with a mouse because it's like drawing. And in addition to (or instead of) setting the opacity, you can control the effect by how hard you press.
Want to select a small area? It's easier with a pen than with a mouse because, again, you just use the pen to draw around whatever you want to select. Want to use the sharpen tool to sharpen just a tiny detail? It's easier with a pen.
When I finish the detail job, whatever it might be, I pick up the mouse again and it takes over the cursor.

Is this what you're looking for?

I've gotten so used to using the tablet that I don't use a mouse at all anymore. I'm lost when I have only my laptop without my tablet with me.

I can go back and forth t wil. But I prefer my wacom to a mouse. It has many good pints. Its easier on your wrists if you spend a lot of time at the computer. I hace pretty severe CPS and It helps me work longer \. BTW i use ot fo everything, PS, AI, After Effects, Final Cut. ABout the only thing i dont use t for. Is web surfing.

First step........ Take the lens cap off.

This is all great info, I too am trying to decide on a Wacom Intuos 4 Medium. I have been using LR for quite some time, I actually just discovered how to use the brush tools. I have PS5, but have not really used it much, as I seem to be able to cover most of my needs in LR, however I really want to learn PS5. I am starting to really like the use of brushes, and although I can do ok with a mouse, I have been thinking about a tablet. I have a buddy who refuses to edit without his tablet. Quick question, while using the tablet is it fairly easy to get used to normal navigation on the computer, like surfing the web, and doing basic edits with your photos? Maybe it's worth it to try to start using my mouse with my left hand. Also, maybe a dumb question, but I am using a BT mouse with my MBP, can I use both a Tablet and a Mouse at the same time on BT?

Oh, and what's the deal with the Academic Version? My wife is a teacher, so I was able to get the discounts for CS5 and LR. I can't seem to find the requirements online....

Yeah, I'm exactly the same now. Don't actually remember the last time I used a mouse.

okay, so I'm crazy ... I mouse with my left hand and use the Wacom Intuos Pen in my right. Often at the same time. But not when I'm drinking alcohol ...

Just need to be sure to clear the pen from the tablet so the pointer doesn't get confused ... or so I don't get confused by a pointer going one way when I'm moving the mouse the other!

Heh! Yeah, I share my workstation with my daughter and grandson, and on several occasions I've been frustrated by my mouse misbehaving. It's taken me a bit of time to discover that one of the kids had moved the pen up onto the pad!

Thanks for the link, but I was looking for the info on the Wacom. I already have LR an PS. It sounds like there is no real difference between the two anyway from what I'm starting to find.

Wacom is actually pronounced "Wah-Kum" as indicated by their support line's recording, though uneducated people pronounce it "Wey-Comb" or "Whack-Um".

Waycom? Wack-em?

My father did some work with the company years ago, and according to him, they pronounce it "Wah'-com".

I'm a long-time tablet user; I think I had my first one in about 1990. I'm now using a Wacom Intuos4 Medium. I use it for any kind of masking work where I need more control and accuracy, but I also switch to the tablet for ergonomic reasons. It really helps to be able to mix things up a bit between the mouse and the tablet. The way I sit and the motions I make differ a lot depending on which I'm using. Sometimes I use the tablet just for browsing the web because I want to lean back more while I'm doing that.

[Edit: I see Bobster beat me to it on the pronunciation.]
