Hello Canon..... I mean what's the problem here.

I just don't get it. Nikon made a normal prime for $200us and every Canon options is $400us plus. One could consider the Canon 28 1.8, Sigma 30 1.4, Canon 35mm 2. All are over $400.

Holy Batman its $299 on amazon right now, the 35 f2 that is. (external link)

Why doesn't Canon make a lens as capable as the Nikon 35mm 1.8 for crop cameras. Which would mean a 30mm for canon because of 1.6x (35x1.6=56, not quite what we want).

Well both Canon options are full frame compatible so this is the main reason why they are more expensive. As for why Canon do not produce a EF-S 35mm I don't think anybody have the real answer.

I was showing a friend of mine how to use his Nikon D3000 and 50 1.8 and wow...is that lens ever better built than our 50 1.8!

Did you show your friend that the 50mm f1.8 can't AF on his D3000! :)

As for the OP, Nikon and Canon both have strengths in their lens lineup. NIkon has a nice new 35mm f1.8 with a ring type motor for $200. Great little option for crop cam users. You'd have to spend about 300 to get the closest option, the 35mm f2, which is a nice lens but does not have a ring type motor. Now if you look in other areas of Nikon's lineup, you'll find that they have an old screw-drive 85mm f1.8 for $450 while Canon has a nice compact ring USM 85mm f1.8 for $375. NIkon doesn't have an inexpensive 100mm f2 and their 50mm f1.4's are both more than $100 higher priced than Canon's. As a whole, Canon has a great lineup but they don't beat every manufacturer in every area.

p.s. Sony has a nice 35mm f1.8 for $200, too! :)

ZING! Yeah, that was a bit of a bummer...kind of a dumb system that they have...but on any other body (aside from the D40/D40x, I think) that would be a sweet lens...

Also, their backwards compatibility rules...I wish I could use my EF lenses on my FD bodies and vica versa (w/out adapters)

But NIkon can pretty much only use old Nikon lenses. While I wish Canon had FD compatibility, you can mount a whole lot of old lenses on a Canon body - including any old Nikon.

What's funny is that on DigitalRev's youtube channel, they had a battle of the bokeh between to Canon and NIkon 50mm f1.8 and the Canon WON!

well, yeah, I admit I know nothing about the Nikon's IQ...it might be crap, but it sure is nice to play with/look at haha...

Though I'm not sure if DR is the authoritative source on photography haha...I've tried watching their stuff, but I just can't take them seriously...they're not entertaining enough to be an entertainment show and not informative enough to be an info show...

How embarrassing, even Sony has a 35 1.8 for their 1.5 crop bodies.

The Canon 35mm f/2 has never been $400. It just went up to $300 last year after selling for $230 for many years (all lens prices went up). The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 costs the same whether you are buying it for Canon, Nikon, Sony, or any other brand.

I think most people would be happy just to see Canon's 35mm f/2 updated with USM focus at its current price. Keep in mind that even though that particular lens cost less than the Canon version, most Nikon lenses cost a good bit more than the Canon equivalents.

Not to bash the Nikon lens but, that thing is soft wide open. I ordered one when I had the Nikon D3. It really wasn't all that.

I would agree with this. Even though I think the 35 is just a tad long for canon bodies. I would prefer the 28.

But what I am trying to say is that 35mm cameras have an inexpensive normal prime in the 50mm 1.8. So why not the crop bodies.

I would love to see a refresh of the 35 f2.

Finally someone see's my pain! I had a Nikon d40 and the 35mm f/1.8, and that combo was simply amazing. I can't tell you how many times i second guessed my switch to canon because I couldn't use that lens anymore.

That lens was so smooth, auto focused so fast, and was super sharp (Nikon does a better job with autofocus issues IMO)

Actually if i switch to nikon again, ill buy it back from my dad and pick up a d7000 :)
