I'm considering purchasing this tripod, and have been unable to find a specification that is of interest.
Can anyone tell me the diameter of the top platform (mounting base) ?
Thanks. :)

Hi,
I've a GT3541XLS. I think they are the same but the legs length. Platform is about 80mm.
Here are 2 pictures, tell me if it's what you're looking for.

Which head are you considering using with this tripod? I ordered the 3541LS from Amazon but it is currently on backorder. I guess you will be using this without a center column, is that right?

I wanted to check the compatability with an older 3-way panhead that I own, but will most likely buy a Markins ballhead for this new pod.

Michel is correct, the top of the 3541XLS and 3541XL are the same. I bought a 3541LS three weeks ago and the outside diameter of the circular base on mine is 80.5mm and the diameter of the raised black circular head mounting area is 70.5mm. In the short time that I've owned it I've been seriously impressed, but I would recommend a NatureScapes Safety Plate for the loose base plate tension screw issue to be absolutely on the safe side.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 3541LS and the 3541XLS is? In essence, what does the X mean? Is it only added length?

The XLS is 20" taller than the LS if all 4 sections are fully extended, ie 78" height (I can walk under mine!). It's also 6" longer folded, 1/2 lb heavier, and $100 (full retail) more expensive but otherwise the same. I normally shoot using only the highest (ie thickest) 3 leg sections extended. For me where I often shoot in mountainous terrain where level surfaces are fantasy, the ability to utilize a leg extension (or 2) on uneven terrain has been indispensable. Its also nice when shooting overhead shots, where the viewfinder is considerably lower than as if viewing horizontally or slightly down, to be able to raise the 4th leg sections. I've used the 4th section(s) much more than I originally estimated. I'm 6'1".

^^^ I would agree with Russ. The XLS is very handy in certain situations. I also use it a lot on the edge of banks next to water where one leg will be extended into the water. I'm 5'8' and glad I went with the XLS.

Hmmmm... interesting. The local store is having a great sale on tripods, so I picked up the 3541LS... but now im thinking the 3541XLS may have been better. This tripod is not meant to be ultra portable (within reason)... though an extra 6'' is substantial.

I'll sleep on it
