Hi all, I recently got myself a sweet little Nikon 35mm f/2 AI-S lens and a solid adapter with AF-confirm chip. Sure enough the AF confirm chip was front focusing a whole lot, so I backed it up to +20 and it was alright.

Now, if I buy another lens and another AF-confirm chipped adapter... and that adapter is NOT back or front focusing i.e. correct confirmation... will my camera detect that it's another "new lens" or will it be doomed to incorrect lightup and beeps?

Cheers,
Zexun

The adapter maybe either not at the right thickness to cause focusing error. You would need another adapter with a different chip ID to fool the body in thinking that you have a different lens. Then, the MA setting would apply to that lens.

I see. So I should be getting lens adapters from different sellers and hope they're not the same?

Generally the high end adapters are precise however I have had miserable luck with focus confirmation and now use it only to ball park focus hand held stopped down.

You should if you don't want the same MA setting applied to another lens. Also, get a split focusing screen too. You should only use AF confirmation light if the lighting isn't good.

You should buy programmable V5+ AF confirm chip (you can program micro adjustment directly on the chip) and you will even get improved AF confirm and new functions like "trap" shooting. So, you won't get any trouble with many adaptors.

I'm sorry... I'm unfamiliar with those products. Care to elaborate / share?

For Nikon Olympus and M42 I use AF confirm adaptors to EOS and the chip must be programmable with a quite recent version ..
On ebay you can hve a look on "Optix V5+" adaptors, I use them and are really accurate and easy to program.
Trap function makes more comfortable to shot active subject, it's not a real AF, but you push the Shutter button the picture will be taken automatically when focus is beeping. Such function exist on Nikon and Pentax, but I could never have it on my 5DMKII, with this type of adaptors it's integrated in the AF chip.

I use EMF chips which I use have focus adjustment built it so you can program each chip

Enter focus micro adjustment

1. Turn the dial and set the aperture to F/2.5 and press shutter button to enter this mode.

EMF chip accepts focus micro adjustment value, ranging from 0 to 31. The value is defined by two numbers. If the micro adjustment value of your lens is smaller than two numbers, you shall insert a zero in front of the actual number. Choose the desired number and press shutter button to enter the value one by one.

Goto Store the parameters to EMF chip

For example, if the micro adjustment value is 25, you shall enter F/2.5 - shutter button + F/3.5 – shutter button

Notice: Please enter the micro adjustment value according to your own tests. The value shall not be entered based on calculation alone.

Goto Store the parameters to EMF chip

When you finish entering all the parameters of your lens, you shall store them in the ring for normal shooting. Here is how:

Change the aperture value to F/57, press shutter button once.

Change the aperture value to F/64, press shutter button once.

Change the aperture value to F/57 again, press shutter once.

If all the values you’ve entered are correct, the above three steps will store all the parameters you’ve just entered to the chip on EMF chip.

If you have miss some steps in the entering process or the value you’ve entered does not fit the value range requirement stated above, the ring will automatically exit setting up mode and no parameters will be stored in the ring.

All the data stored in EMF chip will not lost when camera is powered off.

The default parameter settings of EMF chip is 50mm F/1.4, please change the parameters according to your lens’ specifications.

The "trap" function comes from the fact that the chip fools the camera into thinking there is an AF lens attached to the camera. Since the camera normally doesn´t release the shutter unless at least one AF point is in focus, it waits until you tune in the focus manually, even if you completely depress the shutter.

I have only got 2 AF confirm adapters. I have an adapter for each lens I own. I did AF adjust one of the 2 confirm chips. It was +19. I still do not trust it.

Bringing this back up after a search

I got an EMF chipped adapter for a lens of mine and the focusing is off quite a bit - bad back-focusing. I've tried setting the MA on the camera and there isn't sufficient adjustment. I've tried the MA adjustment on the chip at either extreme (00 and 31) and don't notice a difference. Does anyone know what this number actually represents?

Can't believe I'm replying to my own message with a solution (somewhat) so quickly. Anyway...

I've settled on an MA setting of "24" for my lens. It was focusing behind the subject, now appears about right with both my bodies. Both the low numbers (i.e. < 05) and high numbers (i.e. 30) were giving bad back-focusing, yet 24 is about right, and 20 was front-focusing, so it would appear to me that the true centre-point is around 24 and somewhere below 20 but above 05 is the extreme front-focus adjust setting, and the number directly before that is the complete opposite. Hopefully somebody else finds this useful.

It's pretty awesome having my $50 MF 135mm F/2.8 having flawless MF with assist that is actually accurate. Hardly any bigger than my 2x TC, so great for throwing in a small gap in the bag.
