Had 12GB of pagefile space allocated as well.

Recycle bin is empty.

Pagefile and maybe hibernation file would do it. I don't use hibernate on my desktop, and I moved my pagefile to the second HDD. Just received my second set of 8gb G.Skill Ripjaws, so my system will have a total of 16gb RAM, so I should barely have to use the pagefile.

Recycle bin takes space, and you can delete things like the ability to roll back the windows updates to save more space.

How do you do that please Tim?

If you're still on the fence for jumping into the SSD crowd, give hybrid HD's a shot, for an example Seagate's Momentus XT combines a 7200 rpm hd with 4gb of ss memory to give you a good boost. Very affordable and ample space for a laptop. You can pick up a 500gb at $100 at Newegg

In my windows directory (XP) there's a load of "$NTUninstall" folders. Delete them. Also tell the recycle bin to use at most (say) 2% of your drive. Clean out the temp and cache folders.

There's probably a website that describes how to do it all, somewhere.

I'd personally rather have two smaller SSDs than one large SSD. I don't think you should partition SSDs, and I want nothing other than OS and programs on my main drive so I can easily create an image to recover from later.

I have my OS and programs on my SSD - and my Lightroom Catalog and the images I'm burrently working on. It's still very easy to create an image I can use for disaster recovery.

Frank did that take changing a parameter in LR or the registry...or did you just move the catalog files to SSD and leave the pictures on HDs?

Right now I have all of my user/library files, including the catalog, on my RAID 1 pair.

80 GB for a photographer? Come on you know the answer :)

IMHO, more RAM is the better approach towards waiting for the disk less. Put in a decent RAID system, do one partition and forget about it.

When it comes to the specifics you can check more dedicated computer forums which all come up with various situations where SSDs such, and Sandforce based one in particular, although they are fine in most situations. Then there's the long-term storage safety issue which IMHO is undecided. Myself I am still in the "SSDs suck" camp.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

BTW, the pagefile is probably the last thing you want to put onto a SSD.

If you constantly use the pagefile (with new things paged out) then you should get more RAM instead. This will speed things up even more and using it for paging space is the worst thing for a SSD because of the high rate of writes.

If you don't constantly put new pages into the pagefile then you just wasted the money on the SSD.

To disable the Restore points and service, you can go to Advance System Settings, System Protection, then disable system restore for the drives.

Of course if you disable System Restore, there's no way to utilize Windows ability to roll back to a certain point when your system becomes corrupted, etc. But it's better to make full backup images of your system and disable System Restore. That's what I do for my system.

Also as already mentioned, there may be lots of Windows updates files that get stored on your computer in case you need to uninstall a certain update. If you download CCleaner it can delete these for you.

How do you do that with Ghost and/or DriveImageXML? Those programs create an image of every bit of data on the disk that's in use, not at a logical file level AFAIK.
