I had to tell him how to focus..."Press the * button on the back."

It was from last winter.

You back button focus? How long did it take you to get used to that? How many other people do this?

I tried it once, but my brain never could convince my fingers to cooperate.

Once I read about it and tried it on my 5D a few years ago I never went back. I can't imagine NOT doing it that way anymore - especially on the 1D3 shooting rugby or any action.

I made the change about a week into my DSLR foray with my 40D, love it.

But I tell ya, I always get a little embarrassed when I either try a camera at Canoga Camera or use a friend's camera and I can't get it to focus...

I have no idea how the scoring system works here. Can someone tell me how it works and who to send the scores to? Thanks.

The rules and scoring criteria are on the 1st page of this thread if you click over there.. :) And I think you send a copy of your scores to both of the other judges, and the 1st place winner tallies everything up. :)

Fun times, huh?.... lol.. (I have such a hard time judging)

So we apply this grade to every image and send that or the top 3 or what?

Scoring is like this:

1 is awesome
2
3 average
4
5 not awesome

You score all, then PM your list to the head honcho.

Got the Rokinon 85/1.4 the other day, it's still a nice piece of glass...but it ain't no "L".

Nailing focus with MF is tricky, but at least the Rokinon has a generous focus twist to it. I'm going to need to get a precision focus matte, think it's the EG-S.

Hey, do any of you have a precision focus matte for a 5D not being used? If so, PM me and we can talk business!

Anyway, I cannot do a side by side comparison between the 85L and the Rokinon, but I do have samples AND a comparison of an 85L shot I took and a copy shot I took today with the ROK. I was lucky in that this morning was just as overcast as it was when I took the 85L shot.

The first shot is with the Rokinon 85/1.4 on the 5D (exif= 1/250th sec f/1.4 iso 100), the second is the 85L on the 5D (exif=1/2500th sec f/1.2 iso 100) taken a couple of weeks ago. Post was done in DPP, as I copied the 85L's edits and applied them to the Rokinon's shot, then I adjusted the exposure down a little to macth the 85L's histogram.

The last capture was a quick one at work, and I'm amazed I nailed focus...but there is a small amount camera shake/motion blur.
