I have similar feelings about my Pentax 645N. The shutter and motorized film winder could wake the dead. I don't mind the 4:3. I prefer it over 3:2 but I like 6x6, 6x7 & 4x5 better. I have always been interested in pano cameras but never enough to cough up the $. Right now my main problem is finding time to get out and shoot. I still have a few rolls of velvia 50 still to be developed thatI shot at Niagara Falls. My 1D mk iii is being worked on finally. It was front focusing like crazy.

After spending years with 6x6, I still love the square format and still "see" a lot of pics that way even though that equipment is long gone.

I like all the formats when they are filled properly with interesting content. In fact if you shoot a sheet of 8x10 lots of images of various frame formats can be mined from the shot. So it becomes a trade off of values as to which format works best. One thing for sure though MF SLR's are clunkier than 35mm SLR but mostly because the sound resonates through a larger cavity. I probably won't miss the bulk but then again I have a 4x10 camera which is a tank. That's a special tank though and when you get it right the results are mind boggling.

Turns out the camera I bought was sold by the local high school photography teacher who I have met once donating some photo gear. Great guy. He's saving up to buy a horseman 6x12.

I tripped the shutter on my old OM-1 the other day and had totally forgetten the air cushioned lush sound of the shutter. I love my Canon but in quiet settings the sound is intrusive.

Never had a view camera ... far and away the "clunkiest" gear I ever had was a Pentax 6x7 ... talk about an iron horse.

LOL ...

Some of the Leica rangefinders are known for near "silent" operation. I was at a Fan Ho show with the 645 and I shot a frame and the sound had everyone in the room looking at me. Who is the tall guy with the photo tank in his hand? View cameras take a bit to get used to but I could literally frame a shot (tripod still) in either 35mm or LF in the same amount of time at one point (under 2 minutes). You get your habits in order. Problem is there are at least 11 things that can and will go wrong.

Nothing like the ease of an auto everything DSLR. Nothing like the IQ of a LF.

One afternoon I was shooting the "Point Reyes" with the 4x10 and a Rodenstock 360/6.8 which is a massive 5lb lead weight. Amazing IQ. These young photographers were standing about 100' behind me and I was in their shot so I invited them over for a peek under the dark cloth. I had pretty much framed the entire boat in a 4x10 frame, that's 4" x 10" of ground glass (film size) for those who may be less familiar with LF or Large Format. I let them spy that view on the ground glass and they just about soiled themselves. It is breathtaking going from 35mm to LF. Needless to say they gladly moved in for a closer shot and I was no longer in their POV. Unfortunately the shutter needed a CLA (clean, lube, adjust) and was sticking during the last moments of shutter release and the captures had exposure problems as a result. Got to have the gear in good working order!!!! Doesn't have to be expensive either some of my best LF work is with a Kodak 203/7.7 Ektar; a great lens for peanuts.

First time I've seen that at night and it's clear. That boat is on the west side of Tomales bay and is fogged in more often than not.

I used to own 3 500 C/Ms and you talk about tanks and LOUD. Those blads have of course leaf shutters (in the lenses) and its the back curtain that makes the clunking sound.

I've shot a lot with view cameras in studios I worked after school, both 8X10 and 4X5 Deardorffs, Horsemans and Calumets and theres nothing like large format. The total control you have with perspective is amazing.

Wow, another OM-1 guy? I had one of the first (wouldn't even take the motor drive) but got rid of it in the early '90's.

My Fuji GF670 is just as quiet as a Leica. It is great for candid & street work (although I wish it was wider) In louder situations, it is sometimes hard to tell when the shutter fires. When I was recently at Niagara Falls w/ my Pentax 645N the shutter and motor drive were turning a few heads. I wish I could shoot my 4x5 more. If I go walking w/ the family, the 4x5 gets left at home because they don't want to wait for me to set up a shot. It is funny to come home after going out w/ the 4x5 and declaring to my wife that I only made one exposure. :)

Was messing around a little tonight. Lori was a little tired but she posed for a couple shots...

I was too lazy to set up another back ground light...really needed one....

Another great camera I have owned one of those and a Fuji 645-60mm. Have you seen a Leica M camera? They are tiny in comparison. I have never owned Pentax 645 or 67 but they look like beasts! Still the IQ is excellent many have used them for years. Glad you have that much confidence to narrow a session down to one exposure. I am not so confident. I will typically shoot several frames to cover any defects in the film, the load (have you put one in emulsion side down yet?), exposure, focus, etc and it doesn't hurt to have a spare. Rodney Lough shoots exactly 2 sheets of 8x10 at a scene and he is ultra meticulous so he gets good captures and doesn't waste money.

Shot off 6 frames on the Fotoman and wow does that system work well. Fast, small, light, and completely brainless. No batteries, no meter, the frame count is in a small window, focus with a DOF scale. You can get the film absolutely flat by tweaking the tension on the two knobs. Did some critical focus shots for starters. Then I will do some zone testing with a nice calibrated zone card.

Here is a scanned print from the only 4 x 5 neg I own. My buddy and I took turns being the subject / photographer ... don't even remember the view camera we used ... I never shot more than a handful of exposures with it and it's the only one I've ever used.

Mine was from July of 1977. It replaced an Instamatic ... I'd looked through the plastic viewfinder from the top of a mountain and knew there had to be a better way :D
