There also seems to be the usual colour casts from the vegetation particularly in the first. Sorry for my less than enthusiastic comments.

Composition of both shots is nice with good framing. Because of the high dynamic range fill flash would have been indicated and would have corrected the colour cast as well. To my eye that makes it worse. In these second set there appears to be a blue color cast. Although I am using an uncalibrated monitor, so maybe someone with a properly calibrated monitor can chime in.

If you shot RAW you might sample the characters on the guys T-shirt for "white" and then try to get the white balance right. Take it from there. Then up the exposure and "paint" the exposure of the bright hole in the vegetation about 1.5 - 2 stops down. Up the contrast a little and you might end up with one that is not too bad..... The "feather" in ARC should be set at at least 75% and you really have to be very careful and accurate by doing this. I cannot see any improvement in the faces of the persons; they stay underexposed.... I am afraid it is hard to salvage this shot. Fill flash would have made it so much easier..... Thanks for all your help. I agree I think I did all I can do with this too. Your suggestions were very helpful. I am not home so I know I can improve the the processing some with my desktop and graphics tablet. Next time I will insist on using flash.
