I have the 50mm 1.8 II and was wondering if there is a way to put a filter on it and if so which one is best?

The filter size for your 50 1.8 II is 52mm. Hoya or B+W will be a good one.

Yes, the filter thread at the front.

I use B+Ws.

52mm as should be printed on the lens.

I think your barking for using one on this though, the front element is heavily recessed and even if you destroy it (which its likely to snap in half anyhow) its almost cheaper to buy a new one than a filter!

Rob has a point...in general I have UV filters on EVERYTHING I own the moment I take them out of the box...however, I've been holding off on putting one on the Nifty for reasons like what Rob said.

Also, I was wondering last night...the Nifty is a pretty light lens, so a brass filter with a chunk of glass in it is, compared to the lens's weight, a significant addition...this is just random thoughts, but I was thinking maybe that would add a bit more of unnecessary stress on the AF motor...

Either way, I think my Nifty will continue to live without a filter.

I've got the B+W and I'm glad I got it. I'm not sure how anyone says that it's "almost cheaper" to buy another lens... my lens was $99, and the filter was $19 (both from B&H). I'd much prefer to pay 1/5th of the cost for the UV filter again.... not that I plan on dropping it, but then again, no one does.

If you drop a Nifty, I doubt the UV filter is going to have much say in whether it gets destroyed or not...

I'd buy a hood for it before I'd buy a filter.

Also, Rob's in NZ...sadly, for those of us who don't qualify for free shipping with US companies, things get expensive fast...for me to get that filter from B&H, I'd be looking at about 1/2 the price of a used 1.8...

A quality filter will cost as much as that lens, you can get a cheap one, but use it sparingly under only completely necessary conditions.

Yeah considering most of my filters are around the same price as a nifty fifty I would say don't even bother. Just get a hood unless you perhaps wan't to achieve an effect with the filter, if it's just for protection don't buy one.
