Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about the up coming G7? Like when it might be released and specs?

Sony has fired off the first shot with the R1. Hope Canon comes up with one a little better.

I wouldn't want a G-series cam to be that big, TBH. I think I'll be perfectly happy with my G6 for a few years.

I think a Pro2 would be a better response to the R1 (and I'd love to see it).

I know there are other folks here who have a pretty good grasp of Canon's model timing & release history--any predictions based on the past G releases? Anyone, anyone?

Personally, I'm not interested in more megapixels--I'd love to see a G7 with refinements to the interface. List focal distance in integer form, not with a goofy analog scale. Reduce shutter and focus lag. Higher resolution LCD display, with anti-glare coatings. While I'm dreaming, make the LCD display removable, so you can clip it to your glasses, and run a video cable to the camera. Maybe I'm the only one who'd sport the cyborg look, but wouldn't that be great for certain kinds of shooting, where you just can't see the camera body easily?

Canon have no plans to replace either the G6 or the Pro 1 this year. I guess this means early 2007...

Actually, I went to Best Buy and Circuit City this weekend, and neither had the G6's. I asked the clerks why and both told me they got rid of the g6's because the g7's were coming in. So it looks like they should be coming soon :P.

Canon announce all new camera releases on their BeBit website. BeBit was updated on 22 August with the forthcoming A Series, Ixus and S Series Cameras. There was no mention of a G6 replacement. To put this into context the G6 was announced on the BeBit site on 19 Aug 04 so if its replacement was imminent one could assume that it would have been announced by now.

It is interesting that neither BestBuy nor Circuit City even stock the G6 online--I can see them pulling it from the stores, to make room for the glut of new models, but ceasing to sell it entirely is puzzling, if it's not EOL'd.
But I'm not holding my breath.

G6 is a pretty expensive P&S camera with very few actual buyers in the market except mostly serious photographers but they are very costly to buy to sell so BestBuy (and others) might be clearing them out not because of a G7 coming out soon rather a price drop on the Rebel XT. The Rebel XT even with kit lens blows away a G6 so keeping G6's in stock wouldn't be a good idea as they would collect dust if a XT went down in price to be "the better buy" over the G6.

Too me, an electronics junkie (and former BestBuy employee) this would make more sense then them clearing them out because of a new G6. G6 is an awesome camera but unfortunately it isn't the best of the best in its class of cameras. Hopefully the G7 will be and will come in Black!

Wish canon could get it, make black cameras! Make them all black! Especially their higher end products.

Hi CJM:

So, what camera do you think is the "best of the best" in the G6's class of cameras? Surely not the Pro1, which I also had for a while. Slightly more CA, and seemed like it had too much noise reduction. Except for the longer optical zoom on the Pro1, G6 pictures seemed better to me. Certainly more detailed. But, what I really, truly love about the G6 is the way it feels in my hand. It's well-balanced, I can do just about everything only by moving a finger or two, and it just feels right.

Sure, I wish it had DigicII, USB2.x, and a manual focus ring would make it perfect, but I haven't tried anything better. But I'm always looking . . . I'm certain that my next camera will be an SLR (a 20D?), but it still wouldn't replace the G6 in portability or functionality.

Regards,

Dean

CJM,
I wonder if LeftTurn was thinking what I was thinking--picking your brain :)

So do you still buy from BestBuy, knowing them as you do? Any thoughts on their service plan these days? It used to be very easy to get a replacement product, but seems much harder now.

I can see your reasoning, from a marketing/stocking perspective--especially in the show room, but why not offer the camera online, and order them from a supplier as needed, or just keep a small stock in a central distribution center? This isn't a small company that can't afford to keep a small stock of cameras available to meet demand...
I've since checked, and both CompUSA and Amazon still offer the G6 online, so it's not as if the supply has dried up--but that also doesn't that lend credibility to a G7 in the near future.

I'm biased, as a G6 owner, but I think it's still a prime choice in the non-DSLR, prosumer range. There are lots of buyers who will never consider a camera as large as a DSLR, so quality/price isn't even a consideration.

It would seem to me that the S2 IS is a reasonable replacement to the G6 although a slightly different format. But in terms of features it is the equal and in some areas better than the G6.

Certainly better in some areas, but personally, the lack of RAW format would prevent me from seriously considering it. I haven't looked at the S2 as closely as the S1, but my impression is that it's much more solidly in the mainstream consumer range than the high-end prosumer.
I would love to see some of its features integrated into a G or Pro series!
