It would seem to me that the S2 IS is a reasonable replacement to the G6 although a slightly different format. But in terms of features it is the equal and in some areas better than the G6.

You have got to be joking!!!

No Hot Shoe, no Raw, smaller sensor size, less mega pixels,G6 has a faster lens

Not even close. I'm not saying the S2 is bad camera, it is a great ultra zoom camera but that is about it.

Hi CJM:

So, what camera do you think is the "best of the best" in the G6's class of cameras?

G6 is a great camera but the best in the Professional P&S in my opinion and many camera reviewers is the Oylmpus C-7070. I bought a XT for best value SLR but I bought the 7070 over the G6 because it has better features among super macro and upto f11 stop and shoots in RAW, TIFF and JPG (or jpg and raw!). G6 was my first choice until checking out the 7070 in the store and then reading all I could on it on the web and in magazines. But the 7070 and the G6 are so close that I would put them at 1 and 2 the 7070 gets a wee bit higher marks for upto f11, wider lens, two different memory card slots and it being black.

CJM, So do you still buy from BestBuy, knowing them as you do? Any thoughts on their service plan these days? It used to be very easy to get a replacement product, but seems much harder now.

I do and I buy the service plans (PSP) even though they are REALLY over priced. That's basiclly how they make any money. A PSP is basically an insurence policy against your electronics that the insurence company charges bestbuy 55% and the rest is a BB mark up. When I worked there I got the service plans for 55% and BB part was free. My discount was at cost + 10%.

Now that I don't work there, make lots more money and am happier with life in general I would still buy it on certain things, TVs and DVD players not being one. The PSP is good for some things and useless for other things.

BestBuy Canada doesn't sell the G6 or 20D though, the store BestBuy bought and kept open in Canada called Future Shop does. But the G6 is also missing from their website. So maybe the chain simply dropped them because of low sales?

S2 IS is not a replacement for the G6 it is a replacement and a greatly improved one at that for the S1 IS.

A Rebel XT simply wouldn't work for me. If I had wanted a DSLR I would have chosen one. The G6 was the perfect camera for me when I bought it and still is. As dcains says, "The camera just feels right". I have also gown to love the champagne silver finish. It makes it stand out in a sea of black and pays homage to the original rangefinder cameras on which it is modeled. Most have us have probaby seen the black mock ups of the G6 and IMO they looked awful. Plus i've never seen a camera take better pictures simply because it was black;)

The 7070 is a good camera but certain factors made me shy away from it. The main one being that in my corner of the world it is a lot more expensive than the G6 and I simply couldn't justify the price differential, I also found the menu system less than user friendly. I agree on the wide lense, but counter that the G6 also has two different memory card slots. I also don't see the need for shooting in the TIFF format. But we all have our own needs and opinions, which is a good thing otherwise we wouldn't have all these choices

CJM,
Thanks for the info!
You also make me wish I'd looked more seriously at the 7070 ;) But I was migrating from a G2, and was very happy/comfortable with the menus.

King Size,
I'm with you on black. The SLR I grew up with was mostly silver, with a little bit of black--it was on the edge of the trend towards total black. I still think of cheap 80's P&S film cameras when I see glossy black. But then I also ride a bicycle that is painted expressly to be butt-ugly, to make it less attractive to theives, so I suppose I'm not exactly mainstream.

But back to the topic, am I missing something, or is there no current prosumer digicam on Canon's lineup? I don't dispute that there's no sign of a G7, but the vacancy does seem glaring.

I truly hope Canon will come out with a high ISO CMOS big zoom, swing out LCD prosumer. I want one RIGHT NOW! On the other hand, it seems less compelling for Canon to do it than Sony. With dSLRs, Canon probably makes as much money on accessories than it does on bodies. Sony doesn't have that gravy train to protect. We can still hope.

I bought the C-7070 because its a wee bit better then the G6 but once the G7 comes out I most likely will dump the C-7070. The menus system is different granted but its pretty easy once you get used to it. Sure its not a Canon but in waiting for the G7 its the next best thing.

I returned the XT because its basically a G6 with EOS capibilities and a few other better features and was going to buy the G6 but saw the C-7070 while looking at the G6 and found it a little better and $100 cheaper then the G6. I plan to be one of the first in my city to buy the G7 though and I can't wait even though the wait might be 6 months to a year!

dbump good point! Seems like everywhere the G6 is disappearing. I know of at least two camera sellers that no longer carry the G6. Could it be that Canon plans a Blitz Krieg Camera release right before Christmas? Maybe or maybe not. It is interesting though that where I live and where many others live it seems to be disappearing. Which either makes it discontinued of VERY hot.

There are. The G6 and Pro 1;) Not sure whats happening over in the good old US of A and Canada (Although I do see that both these cameras are still featured on the Canon USA website) but this model is still very much alive here in NZ.
My guess is that Canon are probably working on one camera that will replace both the G6 and Pro 1 in 2006 (as has been noted in this thread this is a small market segment). BTW, CJM, why are you so keen on a G7 if the 7070 is so good?

Just the Canon name. I might not be once the specs are known but normally I like to stick to one brand. Olympus is great but Canon is the best!
