I after putting it off for far too long I am putting together my studio area for portraits. The room is 10'2'' wide x 20' deep x 8'5'' ceiling height. I am putting together a list of lighting equipment that I will be ordering this week.

The screenshot below is my current list all from AlienBees website.

I am wondering if I would be better off with 4 800s or if the 2 800s and 2 400s will be a good combo? My original thought would be that the 800s could be main and fill then the 400 could be hair and another 400 could be for the background ect.

My room is relatively small so I was not sure if 4x 800s would be over kill or not. I like the idea of having plenty of power if needed and all the same unit but am wondering if they will be able to be stopped down enough without creating compromises. I want the option of using them outdoors in the future as well.

I am also contemplating if I should and am leaning towards going with 1 24x36 and one 32x40 over the two 24x36 soft boxes that are listed in my spreadsheet.

I understand that this all can all boil down to personal preference but I am just looking for opinions from people who may have been down this road or who may have done their research as well. Im kind of at the point where I am just wanting to refine my choices!

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Robert
