Long story short, I now have TWO user accounts on my mac #1 and #2. I have been migrating everything to my #2 and I'm almost there. I need to be on my #2. I am the admin, both #1 and #2 are admins.

My iTunes is set up in #1

- I need the ability to run the exact same version of the iTunes app on both 1+2.
or
- transfer the app to 2.
Either or, but not having to start over. Too risky for me.

typically all the questions I've found on the www, people are looking to go from 1 to itunes accounts, use the same music library, and on 2 different mac acccounts/users. My problem is the opposite. I want one itunes.

2nd question, I can export bookmarks in firefox and import then on the other side, but not the bookmark bar. Is that typical?

Cheers
Any 411 would be appreciated.

I am confused about what you are asking. Are you saying you want user #2 to be able to just use the itunes library of user #1? "run the exact same version" and "i want one itunes" are both un clear to me.

While logged in as #1, In Finder, Navigate to the Music folder. Copy the \iTunes folder to a shared location that both #1 and #2 can get to.

Log out of #1

Log in as #2

Go to share location and copy the iTunes folder, then place in Music. That should get your iTunes library moved over...

For Bookmarks...you should run XMARKS, then sync from #1. Log out...log in as #2, setup / config XMARKS to use same account and sync. voila. bookmarks squared away

If I understand you correctly, (and it's fairly difficult) you have created two user accounts on one macintosh, and you want to combine the iTunes library for both users into one iTunes library for the second user.

If that's correct, you should know that there are not two version of the iTunes application on your macintosh, there is only one. It's in the Applications folder, and is shared by multiple users.

To combine the libraries of iTunes #1 and iTunes #2, the easiest way (for you) is to backup the library on User #1 to DVD and then use the DVD to update the library on User #2.

Can't you just copy user > Library > Application support > Firefox > Profiles > Accountname1 over to the 2nd account?

Same for User > Music > iTunes

Unless I misunderstand the question...

thx all, and yes, perhaps I can't articulate this properly.
I understand how to point itunes to a shared folder to find music.
I don't want to launch itunes again on #2, and start from scratch, unless all of my playlists, ratings, ipad ipod etc settings/applications/purchased music, bookmark, photo, all these apps will just work themselves out. I don't think they will.

I would prefer to be able to use #2 and click on itunes and see everything, exactly how it was running on #1. same itunes account, same everthing, the same application. i'm prolly annoying you i'm sorry!

DJr,
The process I outlined will pull your #1 iTunes account / music / playlists to the #2 account (copying entire iTunes folder in #1's Music folder).

Are you sure the libraries will be combined? I thought if you did this you would have to change iTunes settings to point to the different libs in the Music Folder, and that you would have to access them separately.

The most important point to keep in mind is that once a media file is listed in the iTunes library, it is referenced from iTunes by the specific location (ie, full pathname) of where this file is located. Therefore, if you move a file, iTunes will almost certainly lose track of that file, and the result will be a broken link in the iTunes library.

This means that you cannot simply move your files manually to a new location and expect iTunes to find them after you’ve moved them, as it will still look for those files in their original locations. This one point alone has caused many users a great deal of grief, since repairing this situation can often be a tedious process of either manually adjusting the paths to hundreds of files or manually putting those files back into their original locations so that iTunes can find them again.

I will explain my scenario. I have software on #2 for my day job. I do not have the ability to move it or open it in #1. I would like to migrate my entire world on #1 over. it's a pita to move back and forth. it was a stupid decision to put the software on #2. too late!

Somehow I got LR3 to shake hands and it all went down pretty smoothly. But iTunes is scaring me. I have so many devices and settings and playlists. over 250 gb of 320 bit rate music. I don't want to risk having multiple issues, or copies of stuff. I just want to kill #1 entirely, for what it's worth or move the itunes app to #2 in some way.

Well, like I wrote, there's only one iTunes app, though each user can have a different instance of it open. I think I understand what you want, which is to combine both libraries into one, so you can use only User#2 in the future.

Simply moving your library will not accomplish it, because the application will still look for your tunes in the old location. You need to update the iTunes database so that it will know where all your tunes are physically located. That can be accomplished most easily for iTunes by backing up User #1's iTunes Media Library and updating User #2s iTunes Media Library with that data. Then you can simply delete User#1's library completely. [edit]This also provides the advantage that you haven't deleted or changed anything until you're sure that it worked.[/edit]

If you are on User#1 and backup as the menu shows, then switch to User#2 you can then re-insert the DVD while iTunes is running and it will ask if you want to update User#2's library with the stuff on the DVD. That will combine the two iTunes libraries into one. After that, you can just delete User #1, assuming you have everything else you want.

u are kind for helping me through this, but that option is going to be way too messy. I'll just deal with loggin in/out of each user when I need to sync my i-stuff. 250+gb of music. I wish there was a way to just tell itunes to switch users to #2.

So do I - this kind of process is messy and could be a lot simpler. I'm in a similar situation, except all my music (not quite as many GB as yours) is on NAS that is a shared iTunes library that can be accessed from any other computer.

Maybe that's a good solution. If you are on User#1, go to iTunes>Preferences>Sharing and check the boxes as below. That should make User#2 able to access User#1's music, etc without having to do anything else except check User#2s box to look for shared libraries.
