A800, A1200, A2200, A3200 and A3300.
The last one with a mind boggling 16mp.
After the transition from the G10 to the G11,
Canon was thought to have realized that image quality matters.
It seems that the marketing forces are still going strong.

A3200 isn't (yet) listed on the Canon USA site.

This is mind-blowing cannon model. I like it very much because it is a 16mp camera.

I've bought the A 2200 model. I am a long time DSLR photographer, and wanted something small and simple to carry around with me when I didn't feel like dragging out the DSLR equipment. I take this baby with me everywhere. Espessaly on my Motorcycle rides. I get images very comparible with my DSLR images. And, I can also get creative with this camera, and come up with most anything I can get from a DSLR. Great Camera.;):D

It's better to have it and not need it, Than to need it, and not have it.;)

I bought the A1200 a as I wanted a newer Canon camera with with a wide-angle 4x lens to replace my A580 that I got in 2008 (has a 4x lens, not wide-angle). It even has Servo AF (continious AF) and i-Contrast.

Really am enjoying the miniature and fish-eye effects on the A1200.

Got it for $99 at Teds (external link).

Canon cameras: PowerShot S95, SX20 IS, EOS 1100D (T3) & 300D.

Perhaps they are, but perhaps we also have to look at market niche, the A-series has always been the entry point for people who just want to point-n-shoot without regard for technical stuff. They don't care so much about noise at ISO 400, or high-sensitivity sensors (a la the S95 or G12) as they do about getting a baby picture in a place or way that wouldn't scare a baby. Many of us on POTN aren't just interested in P&S, but we seek this place as a means of posting, critiquing, teaching, and most importantly learning, about the ways our cameras work and how to get the most out of them. Canon has to know what market desires what traits, who wants more performance and nuanced performance, and to whom they see a simple MP number and will buy solely based on that. In all honesty, is a grandmother seeking to take a baby picture going to want to learn how to use a S95, or a Rebel XSi (or fill in the blank) when to get the same purpose and a nice 4x6 for her mantle, an A800 or A1200 will more than suffice? No, and Canon knows this.

It is for this reason that cameras such as the T2i / T3i rebels, and the A3300 exist within their desired sectors; as a means to perpetuate the MP war to those who believe that MP's are the end-all and may not look deeper into things such as the processors, the size of the sensors, etc. (although if you're in a D-SLR, you are looking at crops and whatnot at the very least). To finish the dichotomy between D-SLRs and P&S cameras, at least the 18MP on the D-SLR are far larger and thus better at preventing ISO noise and also are better at color gradation. But back to my point, there are multiple markets for digitals, one of which is for the entry-level; and let's be honest with ourselves, if we took all our knowledges and predisposals towards performance and threw it away, and gave ourselves a $150 budget, who realistically wouldn't go for an A3300 if all we knew (regardless of validity) was more MP = better.

Would I buy one as a P&S, perhaps not; but I wouldn't put it past as a gift for someone who wanted a fully-auto camera that got the job done at low expense or someone who just wanted to get their feet wet in digital photography. There is a market, and it is apparently quite profitable (or the A line wouldn't be over 10 years old... A5, anyone?) and it sells. Does its outcome as a niche have a role on the higher-end S95 / G12 and DSLR markets, which have their own audiences? I doubt it very much.

Jason
