Big difference between looking for a bargain, and expecting to get something for nothing...

Pony up da' green, and it can be arranged...just about everything has a price (even a convincing facsimile of love, I'll wager).

Yeh? And I would like a new truck too, but I can't afford it so I don't have one.

Last year was a "give the what they want" year for me....this year I'm actually putting and sticking with a value on my work. Let 'em walk.

Obviously we would like everything cheap but...

1. Lenses last a long time and are precision instruments that would be very hard to make yourself.
2. Cameras similarly - though they have limited lifetime due to technology improvements.
3. Accessories Often not precision stuff and can be obtained as cheap copies.
4. Software -Photoshop in particular is rapidly out of date and only works on one or 2 computers (I believe) and if your computer fails or is out dated you need a new copy.

1 - I think pretty fair
2 - not quite so but pretty much
3 - buy the cheap stuff unless you are heavy user
4 - It's a rip off! if they sold photoshop cheap then millions more copies would be sold + should be open source!

Since you ask - I do write some software.

Um, Photoshop is limited to 2 concurrent installations but you can move the registration to a new computer when/if you get one.

it's the triangle (external link)thing. there's good quality, there's fast turn around, and there's low price. you can't ever do all 3 (and stay in business). You can have 1 or 2 of them, but you have to sacrifice the third to do so.

I agree. I'm not saying I'm the greatest photographer ever but I feel my quality where I am located is greater than any of the others, so I priced myself accordingly. If they wany cheap photography they can find it elsewhere along with the quality to accompany.

With digital coming of age and processing software getting better and easier to use it just isn't that hard to get good results.

Why pay the long dollar for something you can do yourself?

And yes--my dodging tool used to have a handle on it--and we used it under an enlarger where you had just one shot to get it right.

Middle age is when you can finally afford the things that a young man could truly enjoy.

Who cares about the photographer?

Anyone who doesn't want the cheapest option to the results they need is wasting their money.

I'll take cheap and good, thanks!

Of course I want free/cheap and good and fast. I don't realistically expect to get all three, but if I could you're darn skippy I'd take it. Duh!!!
