I saw an item a while back (about 1/2 yr ago) that looked like an ordinary bag. However, it was designed to hold a DSLR and is open at the bottom so you can shoot without pulling the camera out. It was NOT meant to be a bag, just a stealth cover. Googling does not seem to help. Does anyone have an idea what I'm writing about?

Yeah. Can't recall what it's called but there've been a couple of threads on it here. Frankly, I think any camouflage value it might have would be gone the instant you lifted it up to eye level to take a picture. In fact, you'd probably attract much more (undesirable) attention from security personnel and potential thieves with one of those than you would just pulling your camera out of the bag in the normal way.

You may have a good point there. I wonder if anyone bothers to dress up the camera so it looks a lot worse/cheaper than it actually is when out in less than perfectly safe locations.

There are lots of folks here who tape over the logos and buy black lenses, rather than white, for that purpose. I've always thought that a bit silly in that if someone is going to rob you for your gear are they likely to worry whether its a rebel or a 5DII? Its not like you can hide a 7 inch long lens regardless of color, but it seems to make them feel more secure.

This might be better named the "pervert bag..." Using one of these is certainly going to cause some unwanted attention.

Canon 70D/70-200 f4/17-55 2.8/BG-E9/430EZ I like DSLR's. It makes a distinction between photo fans and normal people who don't give a damn how a picture could look like

That's it! ... however, based on y'all's feedback so far, it may not be such a wise idea after all.

I think if I saw a guy carrying that, he'd get my attention immediately cause it looks exactly like a purse.

I wonder how weather resistant it is - it might make a good rain or snow cover!
