I have good freaking news!!!! I got the 60D working with LR3 Tethering!!! I resorted back to my program days thinking and figured since the 60D is new there are probably updates to the .dll files that LR needs to know about. Here's a screenshot of it working!

IMAGE: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5290/5328711723_561bed6761_z.jpg
IMAGE LINK: http://www.flickr.com/photos/markwphoto/5328711723/ (external link)

After searching around my computer and comparing files I found the solution.

The solution is actually rather simple and easy. You must have the latest version of EOS Utility installed on your computer.

First off, Browse to your program location where LR3 is installed. In my case it was in

Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.3\tether_canon.lrplugin (Windows computer)

There are two files you'll need to rename in this folder. EDSDK.dll and EdsImage.dll. I renamed my to EDSDK.dllold and EdsImage.dllold

Leave this window open!

Next open a new window and find your Canon EOS Utility Folder. In my case it was in

Program Files (x86)\Canon\EOSUtility\

Find EDSDK.dll and EdsImage.dll and copy them to the Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.3\tether_canon.lrplugin folder. If you left this window open all you have to do is drag and hold down the control key to copy them.

Basically all you're doing is updating the old SDK dll's with the latest version.

Reboot your computer and open LR, start tether capture and plug in your camera. If you copied everything right it should all be working now. Happy Tethering!!!

I'm sure the fix is similar on Mac and I'm also sure this will work for the t2i as well!

Mark,

Thanks for the post.

Has anyone gotten this to work on a Mac? I haven't installed the EOS utility; I haven't needed it for anything else yet and I don't like cluttering my computer with unnecessary programs. If nobody else has tried it, though, I might be the guinea pig...

Trying to understand this. Is this to transfer files directly out of the camera and into LR?

Yes - it's to load the images into LR while you are shooting, so you get immediately high-res results. Very useful for studio/portrait/product photography. Not so useful for sports or walkabout photography ;)

The tether_canon plugin exists, but there is nothing named similar to EDS* in there. Of course, Macs don't use DLLs, theyuse frameworks or dylibs, but I've looked and couldn't see anything that might indicate it might work similarly so far...

To enlarge a bit, it's to use Lightroom to control your shutter speed and automatically import and display imgages as they are captured.

EOS Utilities packs some very good stuff for cameras supporting Live View, including a Live View display on the computer and Live View focus control, none of which LR has, but LR is still good in a pinch.

I know nothing about mac but I would assume there is a file or 2 in the tether_canon plugin folder that is named same as a file(s) that would be in the EOS Utility Program folder. Of course the mac frameworks or dylibs could be located in a completely different place. If the frameworks or dylibs are all centrally located in one place for all programs, then LR should work with the 60D with no extra steps needed. The only thing you would need to do is install the latest version of the EOS Utiltity and you should be in business but I'm guessing that is not case. Hopefully some of the Mac experts may be able to step up to plate and help find a solution.

I love the EOS utility and the control it gives but direct tether shooting to lightroom works much faster than using the EOS utility and watched folders. Last week I did a shoot at a school and it worked great. There are some thing that lightroom direct tethering does that the EOS Utility can't (of course and vice versa).

Here's how it work for me on my shoot:

1. I turned on tethering capture in LR and setup a session name.
2. Next I checked segment photos by shot. What this does is allow me to create a new folder for each kids I was shooting with the kids name.
3. Next I set the destination and finally applied my default LR metadata preset to apply my copyright info.

Once I click on OK a box pops up so I can type the first kids name. Now I'm read to shoot!

Here's where the beauty of lightroom comes in.... As I'm shooting, lets say I notice I need more contrast and fill on an image. Now I can make an adjustment in develop mode and on the tether capture window I can change the develop preset to same as previous. On the next shot I take it will apply the same corrections I just applied to the previous image to the new image(s) being imported in to LR! So you can make on the fly adjustments and process to your images as you shoot. By the time I was done with the shoot I didn't need to process any images at all. All I had to do was some basic retouching for blemishes and export the images the each kids gallery (which I used publishing services for smugmug to automatically create the galleries and settings for me but that's another story). With the EOS Utility you don't get to process your image on the fly as with LR, but with the EOS Utilty you can completely control the camera from the computer. LR can only trip the shutter and will not allow you to make any adjustments to the camera, ie shutter, aperture, etc. So there are pros and cons to each it's just a matter of finding which works best for you. :D

Ah, well, I haven't delved into all of those LR utilities, so it's good to know that it's tried to make it more useful in terms of handling organization and development. Good to know!

Guess it's time to install the EOS utility! Thanks for the notes.

I already said that this is not the case. (*Edit: And I was wrong, didn't realise the binary was also an app bundle with stuff inside it too)

Indeed, and I looked. But LR doesn't work like this anyway - tethering works with my 450D in LR, regardless of whether I have EOS Utility installed or not - and EOS Utility is not listed as a LR requirement for tethering, indicating that LR should handle this itself without outside dependencies.

You've already seen if does this on the PC because LR includes its own copy of the EOS dll, rather than using the EOS Utility's one. I would assume the Mac LR will work the same to maintain cross-platformness...

No, pretty sure it's not the case. I haven't exhaustively looked because /Library/Application Support/Adobe is a fairly massive collection of files, but I did look in the obvious places without success... but I certainly could have missed something...

Edit: The EOS Utility app bundle includes the EDSDK.framework, so that's a start...
Edit: found the elusive EDSDK within the Lightroom bundle, as a package within a package within a package... so it *might* be possible to do something similar to the OP's described with Windows...

It's here:
/Applications/Adobe Lightroom 3.app/Contents/PlugIns/tether_canon_plugin.lrplugin/Contents/PlugIns/tether_canon.app/Contents/Frameworks/EDSDK.framework

If someone has a Mac + 60D, give it a try (backup first!)

Awesome to hear that you found the framework and man is that buried pretty deep! In theory if this is the file that needs to be replaced then you Mac guys should be good to go. If this does in fact work then once the EDSKD.framework is updated then the EOS Utility would not longer be needed on the computer. However, I find it advantageous to have both the LR Tether option and the EOS Utility installed and use the best tool for the task at hand. Good luck to the Mac people out there!

Personally speaking, before Lightroom had tethering I used to use the EOS Utility to shoot into a LR watch folder, but now LR handles tethering natively, I've never gone back to the EOS utility.

However, some of the remote control features can be useful, and LR doesn't quite get that far currently...

Well, "close but no cigar" with tethering a T2i and the Mac version of Lightroom 3.3

I successfully replaced the ESDK framework inside LR with the one from the EOS Util. (Version 2.9)

The good news is that Lightroom now sees the T2i and even talks to it to fire the shutter and read the various modes (focus, wb, etc).

The bad news is that after the shutter fires, the tether_canon plugin crashes when trying to transfer the shot from the camera to the computer.

Ooooh. So close.

Somebody want to give me a 60D to try this on?
