Taken during the POTN trip to Catalina. We were supposed to be seal watching, but when this guy flew by the guide seemed to make a big deal of it. I would guess we were about 100 yards away so he didn't take up much of the frame. Sorry about the quality, it is about a 60% crop even with a 300(x1.6)mm lens.

Any input on IDing it?

Rad

To me it looks like a Golden Eagle--those are ID tags in its wings.

The deckhand on the boat we were on ID'd it. It's an immature bald eagle.

My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

I looked up "Golden Eagle" and "Catalina Island" and came up with an article on foxes that mentions both the Golden Eagle population and an effort to reintroduce the Bald--so with the tags it is probably the Bald I would think. (Don't know my Eagles :o )

That is what I thought, but being so ignorant of such things, and the fact that it did not look like the one on my doallr bill, I figured I had heard wrong.

Thanks for confirming -

Um, yeah, immature bald eagle.
Guess I was a little late...
:-)

Nice capture though - must have been exciting.

That sounds like an awful lot of money to spend just to see where a bird is flying!
