Ok, so here is the quick scoop,

One of my friends just bought the 70-200mm f2.8 IS2, and yes, I am jealous.

So, really is the new 70-200mm just that good? Is it the stuff dreams are made of?

It really is that good if you need a zoom. Maybe your friend will let you try it out.

I've been shooting with mine for about three weeks at various events. It is spectacular by any criteria.

It IS that good. I won't go shooting without it anymore, whereas when I had the f/4 IS, sometimes I abandoned it at home. ;)

When 9+ out of 10 owners say it's the best thing since sliced bread, you know they ain't foolin'.

If you need an outstanding 70-200mm f2.8 lens it is "the" best on the market at present (for canon). It's image quality is also so outstanding as to put it in competition with prime lenses (the primes tend to still have the edge, but its a slight edge rather than a full blown night and day difference).

Furthermore its good enough to work excelently with a 1.4TC and very usably with a 2*TC (with the 2*TC m2 it gets image quality equal to the 100-400mm L and the new M3 TCs are said to have great AF speed bonuses over the M2)

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

I traded in my MK I and have been more than satisfied, I was always a little disappointed with the MK I considering the initial cost.

Myself I traded in my 70-200mm f2.8 IS L original as well; but in my case I was never dissapointed with its performance 70-200mm nor even when using it with a 1.4TC - in my case it was the performance with the 2*TC that pushed me to upgrade.
Though I'll add that I never used prime lenses in the similar ranges as the 70-200mm (eg 135mm L and 200mm L)

Yes, it is that good. It is every bit as good as all the positive reviews you've been reading. I've owned the version I and while that's a good lens, the new version is just that much better. Best in this zoom range, bar none. Prime Quality Good
