Got my first DSLR last week, a Canon T2i with the 18-55mm IS kit lens. Loving the camera so far. Since it's been in the 20s here I really haven't been outside. So our two cats have been the main subject. Seems like more dog lovers than cat lovers so need to add this for all the crazy cat people lol.

**Edit: Sorry I posted this in the wrong section I thought this was the photosharing section and didn't see an option to delete or move the thread.

So this thread isn't a total waste of time for this thread I will ask a question to the people with cats out there.

Any tips on getting good action shots, like them jumping, wrestling with each other, and just general cat crazieness?
I had all our blinds open and lights on with what seemed like pleanty of light, but just couldn't get the shutter fast enough to freeze their action. I was trying to keep the ISO under 1600 for noise, but even at 1600 the shutter seem too slow.

I did try using a flash gun that my dad let me borrow, not his 580 ex ii, but I just wasn't quick enough on the trigger to capture them and with the slow recycle time I could fire off a few pics a sec.

Try shooting in Manual so you can set your shutter speed. I think 1/250 or quicker should be enough.

hello.

That's all I shoot in, I got used to being in manual from my Canon A620 point and shoot. I'll have to look play with the settings again and the ISO.
The pics above where taken using a Vivitar flash gun that was pointed up towards the ceiling with a bounce card out.
Just seems like if I want those fast shutter speeds indoors I have to bump the iso to 3200+

Nice framing, great set.

If you want to get away from the 3200+ iso indoors then you're going to have to turn on a lot more lights  or get faster glass...

Ah, keep 'em coming. Things that help -
1) fast lenses
2) lots of natural light
3) speedlights on top of your camera.
4) cats that sit still

This one is natural light from a 70-200 f2.8. ISO 200. She's going to be MAD when I bring home a puppy tomorrow! (she's used to dogs, she'll get over it)

Wrong forum ... this is talk, not photo sharing.
