I just found out that I will be traveling to wonderful warm Minneapolis next week  and I have to find a carry on bag that will hold my 15" laptop and my 5d and 2 lenses. All I currently have is my Domke F-2 or a laptop bag, but not something that would hold both.

Being that time is a factor, what are some recommendations? I have tried the local camera shop but to no avail. I don't think Best Buy carries anything like that (not fond of them anyways) but will check anyways.

If it comes down to it, any DIY suggestions that I could maybe try?

kata bags are cheap and good. my dr467i has a laptop compartment and would hold the 5d with two lenses, if the lenses are not too large.

How about one ofthese (external link)and a store bought backpack that holds a laptop? Why not take your laptop bag and the Domke? I always take seperate bags (computer and gear).

I agree - take the camera bag and the laptop bag. That's also my preferred method of operation.

Carry your laptop in the laptop bag as your "personal item". Put the camera gear in the Domke and put the Domke in a standard "roll on bag" as your "carry on item". You will still have sufficient room in the carry on bag for a change of clothes and personal items.

Do they allow you to take both a camera bag and a laptop bag as well as a roll on bag?

I thought you were only allowed to take on 1 item as carry on. I will be going for a business trip for a week and don't think the roll on bag will hold my clothes and the Domke. I don't want to put it in there and then have them say for some reason that the bag must be checked. That would not be good for me.

You're allowed a carry-on and a "Personal Item" on most airlines. The "Personal item" can be a camera or laptop bag, or a purse. The general requirement is that one bag must fit under the seat in front of you. If the flight is full (like they are'nt going to be?), you might be told to check a standard roll-on (max. permissible size) bag at the gate, so it's safer to carry 2 non-rollers if you want to be sure you get your gear on board.

If you're in doubt check with your airline (MSP - Northwest/Delta?) about restrictions fo your particular flight (might vary depending on the aircraft; regionals may have smaller permissible sizes).

I fly quite a bit, I carry my camera gear in a Lowepro backpack and laptop and change of clothing in a Patagonia messenger bag (it's my "purse"). I haven't been hassled yet, and it's a lot less than I see most people hauling on the planes.
