Hey Everybody,

In hoping to share my photos with more than just my hard drive, I've revived my Flickr from the dead and purchased a pro account. Currently it has a meager six photos on it uploaded two years ago (link in signature if you want to look) and I've run into a roadblock - should I watermark my photos for Flickr or not?

I've run into several instances in the past (one no more than two months ago) of people using my photos without my permission, which makes me hesitant to post photos without watermarks. Nevertheless, I really hate to see photos with watermarks and I know it will turn people off to the photos.

What do you guys do? I'd love to get your insight (both professionals and hobbyists).

Depends on how worried you are about theft. I have a watermark that I put on anything I have any concern that it might be used without my permission (and that I care). Usually if I do portraits for someone I would only watermark it if there were some concern about usage, but most often they get a disk, or prints and are free to use them however they want as far as I am concerned. Obviously different business models and different subject matter require more vigilance.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not really doing any staged portraits, and as a hobbyist I'm not really selling photos (or granting usage rights).

Do you have a Flickr?

I have one, but I dont use it anymore. I use smugmug as a catchall sharing site for family. I really need to organize it better.

How did you find out that your images were used else where?
I'm allways intrested in seeing if anyone has used any of mine.
thanks

Most recently one photo was used in several different publications - after the initial one (which I discovered by luck) I had a hunch as to where it might also appear and was unfortunately correctly on several accounts.
