This is my first attempt at a "wildlife" shot.. I shot this with my A95 in macro mode, on a tripod with the DC52 2.4x teleconverter.

Here's a cropped picture (30%) at full optical zoom (7.2x).. the image came out darker than intended.

1/500s, f/5.6

And another attempt, this time using full digital zoom (effective 28.8x magnification.. not to happy about the image quality)

1/80s, f/4.9 with 4.1x Digital Zoom (eck!)

Suggestions and criticism welcome.

I'm sorry if I think your response here a bit rude but the Canon forum is for Canon users no matter what kind of canon they have , there's nothing wrong with critiqing an image based on composition and such but a line has to be drawn somewhere, and I personally feel such comments are unwarranted , this forum is a tool people use to get better at what they love doing they dont come here to have there equipment put down ,,,,,,think about it man

P.s I like the second one quite a bit thank you for sharing

I think these are great first try's...

I also know that you can do better,.. yes even with an A95.. which is a great little camera indeed.

The first image is backlit. whcih is a very tough situation for lighting.. next time try and move to the other side with the sun to your back...

Now the second shot has a lot of promise.. what would have made this work.. would be to lose the little teleconverter.. this would force you to try and get closer to the subject.. and therefore make the background more blurred... and it might have helped with the focus/softness we are seeing.

the trick of course is getting closer ;)

FYI, for those that think the camera makes the photographer.. look here to see what the A95 can do;

Firstly, welcome to the forum!:D . These are very valiant efforts! I really love the lighting you've achieved in the 2nd one as that is one beautifully backlit butterfly. In the first one the sky is overblown but believe me, this can happen easily with ANY camera...Keep on posting, Croesus as you'll get plenty of constructive feedback here (such as CDS just gave)!!;)

If I haven't already said, wleocme to the forums also Croesus. I think for a first go at it they are quite good and show alot of promise. well done. I'll also 2nd what CDS said, the A95 is a wonderful little camera, I have one myself and the underwater housing for it. I have seen some outstanding photography come out of some other peoples A95 also. Fantastic and handy little unit.

Cheers Wayne :D

Number one has too much blown out sky.. As Dancad indicates..It's not your camera.. It's just the technique.. You can do this with a $5000 pro camera too. Try to avoid using cloudy skies as a background in the same manner you would avoid the plague :) Activating your flash might have helped this one a bit by brightening up the forground..

Number two came out really well... The soft green background really sets off the subject.

Thank you all for your comments.

My personal favorite is #2 as well, but digital zoom doesn't allow for much sharpness. I was pretty stuck as far as positioning/lighting goes, since the Monarch perched on some bush at the edge of a cliff.

As for the camera, I don't have any huge expectations-- it's a very nice P&S, but a P&S nonetheless. My first digital camera (a gift from years ago) was a 2.1MP fully auto camera, so I'm hoping the A95 (coupled with all your valuable feedback) will allow me to develop my skills and eventually know how to use a DSLR effectively, should I get one.

What patronizing crap! I suppose if you own a 10D or 20D you take better pictures? Well I often frown at some of the images I see here from £500-£1000 cameras. The cheaper the camera the more effort you have to put in to end up with a reasonable image. The A95 is the next model up from my A80 - a brilliant little camera, capable of really decent images. So hang in there Croesus - you have great camera.
