Just curious to see some opinions. Not that I'm getting this lens or eyeing it.
What are your thoughts about this lens ? Do you hate the lens ? Would you ever consider it?
Anyone had experience with it ?

It is what they thought an L carry around looked like a few years back. In reality, it seems like a heavy lens that has too many compromises.

I have one. I love it. But...it all depends on how you intend to use it. For me, it's a travel lens, zoo lens, and a lens I take with me when I don't know what I'm going to need. Yes, it's heavy, but I don't mind it at all. I carry it over my shoulder in a Tamrac 519 Pro bag, just the 7D and the 28-300L. Within those parameters, it's great. In the last year alone, I hiked up Half Dome in Yosemite with it in a hiking bag, carried it around all of San Francisco over my shoulder, hiked in Maui for 10 days, and took the family to Brookfield Zoo with it. Got shots of the kids up close, and was immediately able to zoom in on any animal.

You'll notice though, all those activities are outside, where you don't want to fumble around with a lot of gear, or need a flash. I'm sorta into the "active lifestyle" stuff, as you can tell, so to me weight is based on what you have to carry, in total. And, I found being able to carry a single body and single lens, even the 28-300L, was easier and lighter than a bag of glass that I would have to change in and out instead of enjoying what I was doing.

So...in those circumstances, it's great. However, I'm sure there are plenty of uses where other, cheaper, lenses would make much more sense.
