How to achieve this effect?

Hello, I saw this processing used on a recent Channel 4 AD. It's a bit David Hill stylee. Apart from getting the right kind of lighting architecture in the first place how is the processing done to get this effect. Its so kool!

Doesn't look like much processing of the actual photo?

They shot the guy with two rear strip lights, a soft box up front, then cut him out of the photo and pasted him on a background someone else compiled from a bunch of other images, with PS'd in tornado clouds.
